Two questions, and any advice much appreciated.

1) After being out of M cars for 4 years I am delighted be back in an F10 M5 CP. I am really impressed with the improvements over the E60 and E63 that i had previously though the V10 engine was incomparable. However, the lack of rear end grip is considerably worse than I can ever recall previous M5's. I suppose some of it may be down to the extra power as well as better bottom end, but I did wonder if the tyres may be a factor. I currently have pirelli P zero's on 20" wheels and wondered what other M5 owner's experience of different tyres was?

2) Winter tyres! I think quite a lot has been written previously about this, seems to crop up most years I think. Just to be clear though, I am correct in thinking that I can't fit a winter tyre to my 20" rims even though 20" tyres are available, or have I misunderstood what's been written previously?

I would be very gratefully for any advice offered

Can't speak for 20" winters, I had 19" on mine but agree with JMBMWM5 and i went from P-Zero to SS and it was night and day.

With winters the car was really good even in the worst wet weather yes

Another vote for the MPSS or MPS4S - noticeably better than the P-Zeros. Its not just on the M5 I've made that comparison either.

+1

I bought JMBMWM5's winters for my M5 with PA4 and they were astoundingly good.

Only problem is that I went through the rears rather quickly and they are about £400 each.

Currently running Michelin Pilot SS on my M6 and will be changing to Pilot Sport 4s when they are worn out probably middle of next year. Everyone I've spoken to that has compared the Pirelli and Michelin tyres agrees that the Michelins are significantly better.

Just to clarify after further consideration and to avoid any financial disaster before I spend cash, is it alright to fit the same winter tyre sizes as the summer tyres,
ie 265/35 20's on the front and 295/30 rears?

Yes, if fitting on the same wheels, then stick to the summer tyres size.

Recommended winter tyre size is 255/35 R20 on a 9J rim, but if you're using your standard wheels then stick to the same size as above.

Agree with others, P Zeros are RUBBISH in terms of grip and also wear. Michelin PSS far superior.

Also suggest swapping rear tyres well before they reach the legal minimums, just swapped my rears MPSS at around 3mm as the grip was getting noticeably worse especially in the wet. Now running PS4S (20").

No point having power if you can't transfer it to the road - makes a few hundred quid on tyres an excellent performance (and safety) upgrade

How many / what months of the year are you running winter tyres?
