Having owned an E60 M5 I've had a succession of boring but comfortable oil burners. I'm in the market for a new one and was taking a look at the G30. I started with the 520d, quickly got tempted into the 530d and then the 540i. After all I only do about 7K miles a year now.

And then whilst looking around the dealers I noticed I could have a fairly low mileage F10 M5 for less money than a shiny new G30. The insurance is no different for me. The fuel is more but not by mega amounts. With an AUC extended warranty thrown in followed by the £80-90 pcm payments I can be insulated from most risks.

I loved that old V10 but I got rid of the E60 for two reasons. First I changed job and was going to be doing 15K which when I was getting 13 mpg on average was painful. Second it had to be parked on the street at my last address and the local yobs vandalised it a few times. Neither of these apply anymore so maybe I should dip my toe back in....

So should I go for it? Are any problems emerging now that they are getting slightly older? Do you think the bottom will fall out of used values once the new M5 hits the showrooms?

I'm also considering the RS6 as well, just for a change, but I think they come with more problems.

It's a no brainer in my book. I recently got back into M5 ownership with a late plate low mileage M5 and the F10 is superb. If you are serious then take some time to watch the market as prices of cars go up and down. I took some time to find one and would suggest that you go for one with the competiton pack. Given that the new model is due to be launched in the next 2-3 months it might make sense to wait as there will surely be quite a number of the F10 coming on the market then as people move up, and prices are likely to fall then. I found dealers would usually drop 1.5-2k on a car if they thought you were serious and prepared to do a quick deal. More than that was difficult.

A word of caution, there a quite a few late plate cars which dealers will tell you are ex BMW, and whilst this may be strictly true, the car may have actually belonged to someone unconnected to BMW. In my case I bought a car with very low mileage (3.5k) which turned out to have been registered to a car hire company and been flogged to death. (it needed two new wheel bearings amongst other faults, none of which were picked up by the BMW AUC check). I also found someone else had bought it prior to me and then rejected it. I also rejected the car but it took four weeks to get my money back. This from a main dealer in the South East, part of a big national dealership chain. I would therefore be suspicious of any "ex BMW" car as a result. (A lot of them seem to have a YK plate)

I hope that is of some help and hasn't put you off, they really are a great car and no contest compared to a bog standard G30 in my opinion.

The new F90 M5 won't affect the price of the F10 M5 they are different markets 30-50k are where the vast bulk of the AUC ones sit vs. a new 90k car.

Prices of the F10 will continue to follow a path of depreciation just like any other car of this type, get into a 50k one today and expect to lose at least 30k of that over the next 4 years.

Go for it. I know a very skilled specialist BMW garage owner, he has an F10 M5 and an E39 M5.

I would expect a significant amount of F10cars to come on to the market at this time as people change up to the new M5. This will inevitably affect the market.
