Just bought an F80 M3. Questions..

My new (to me) M3 is a recent purchase and it has the MP Super sports on.
I've had these tyres on other cars and whilst they are the cutting edge on performance cars I tend to find them crashy and noisy (drone)
Sooo I know what most are going to say but what are your thoughts on using a lesser/softer tyre that has better wet grip and less noise?
Maybe some goodyear or even my favoured KU39 (yes I know but they are great on my Z3M Coupe)
What are peoples thoughts? Anyone else veered away from the standard issue.

Im still running the MPSS which have only done about 4000 miles, grip is poor this time of the year.

your issue if you go for a lesser tyre will be the rear end traction. even with MPSS its a challenge in the dry to not light them up when pulling away with any urgency. the best combo (money aside) is to get yourself a spare set of wheels and a set of winter tyres. i have just changed my MPSS/summer wheels over to winters and the traction is now excellent again.
what you gain by going with a more all weather tyre this time of year will take away a large portion of your enjoyment of the car in the dry/warmer months.
and drone although apparent with the MPSS is also related to the reduced noise insulation on the M3 so a silent tyre on a 320d for example will not be "as" silent on an M3.
if you dont want to invest in spare wheels then just swop summer/winter tyres on the same rims although i CBA with the faff hence used it as an excuse to buy new "summer" wheels and use the 437M's for winters.

Given Kumho are 400 sheets or so I'm keen to see how they work on the F80 and if they are crap it's not a heck of a lot to lose.
The Current MPSS have plenty of tread left so it will be a good comparison if I change them out now

Yeah sounds crazy but I like the kumho KU39. Got them on my Z3MC and they are super grippy.
I had MPSS on a 535d I used to own and now the M3 and they are noisy and crashy. I might live to regret it but I can always refit the MPSS if they are dreadful.

It does indeed. I'm interested what tyres you've tried them against and how old they were. t in terms of ride qualityI put KH31s onto a Mondeo V6 I owned years ago and it just washed out when pushed on ; Goodyears never gave this and neither did Michelins when I went back. KU31s on my S2 were similar. Sister's Saab on them again is similar ; even she feels it doesn't drive right!
Maybe you don't drive hard enough :P. To be fair, Kumhos are fine for normal driving

Snap!I bought it on Falken FK452s & FK453s. I found them grippy, especially the latter. But the PS4s/4Ss are another league

Nothing wrong in trying them.
I'm not being a cheapskate trying to get away with cheap tyres - I'm keen to see if they perform as well as they have on my Z3M. I switched from Dunlop sports on that and found to Kumho to be great in the dry.
I never use the Z3M in wet/winter so part of me wants to see how they perform on the F80

One of the reassuring things about premium tyres is that when the say they are Summer Tyres - they mean it. Do your chosen tyres say anything similar? A little worried that you’re about to fit tyres that the weather has turned into Ditch Seekers, on the basis that when the tarmac is warm they work.
I guess with me I've been fed up on spending cash on things that are meant to save money but I end up wasting it, so end up going with trusted options or my own experience of stuff. It's happened to me on shoes, headphones, and other things. That is, buying cheap and buying twice. On cheaper things I guess it's not as much to lose.
But if you have the cash to play with, fair play

That said I'll say this. My friend with his F80 M4 Manual finds my E46 M3 a nicer drive on a long run. When I've driven his I can agree. While I think gearboxes may play a part with regards to pedal positioning his is very twitchy in the wet on MPSSs, even when cruising at 70mph! Mine in comparison is glued to the road!
Whether his has an alignment issue I don't know. On 15k miles I'd doubt it! You do wonder if the MPSSs are playing a part. He will need a pair soon and he's debating getting MPS4Ss or BMW approved MPSSs.

It's always interesting to hear. I used to always just buy from the top 3 brands but as Ive got older Ive tended to give other stuff a try to find out myself.
Like Ive said - I'll remove them if crap but it's worth a shot to satisfy curiosity.
On a side note - my business is right next to the place owned by the chief instructor at Oulton - Mike Gorton of MGA motorsport and we were talking about the the M3/4 last night.
At Oulton they have 10 M4's and have had M3's from previous generations over the years as their track cars.
His opinion of the current M3/4 isn't too great - for a track driving car he says the throttle is way too snappy and driven at speed it's far less predictable at the rear.
He rates the V8 as the best so far and even feels the M2 is far nicer and faster to drive on track.
He feels the M4 is constantly trying to get out of shape.
I'll ask him to take the Kumho emblazoned F80 out to see what he thinks too
