Unfortunately some bast*rd has stolen both my wing mirror glasses and in the process has cut the cables (grrrr!). Apparently they do it to cars parked on side streets so be vigilant about where you park.

Would anyone have any recommendations/advice on how to fix it without selling my kidneys? the glass costs almost 500 each from BMW and the cut wires I'm not even sure. Has anyone got any insight as to whether the cable (for heating and autodim) is part of the door wiring loom or is it part of the wing mirror?

thanks
Mo

Sorry to hear this - it is indeed a common occurance in London - i think you'll find the wiring is part of the mirror and as they have cut the cables you'll need new mirror housings which is going to run you over £2k. Irony is that they could have just pulled the cables out... they pop out easily - no need to cut them at all.

Part number is: 51168050085 and 51168050086

The cabling can be DIY'd if you have some basic electrical knowledge too

Not the end of the world, but a headache nontheless smile

Thanks all, I could claim off my insurance but a little worried about premium going up next year as already im paying quite a lot plus a high excess, perks of living in London..

Would you guys think if I want to pay for it myself its worth going to a good indy and have them fix up a solution for the wires? if so any decent indy's you know of in London or nearby?

Why would anyone want to steal the glass from wing mirrors? The whole wing mirror I can understand. But just the glass...

They will have very expensive auto dimming mirror glass which I'm guessing it easier to steal then trying to take the mirror off.

Try Phil Crouch of CPCPE http://www.cpcpe.com/

Great indy M Car specialist and he will have no issues sorting this out for you.

Well worth the drive up to Amersham. Have been using him since 2008 and he looks after all of my ///M Cars and I live in South Kensington.

Mention my name Kumaran.

TBH I can't remember when I last heard of a car being stolen & I have lived in a village 5 miles from Hull for the last 25 years.

what did you do at the end? Were 500 pounds quoted by BMW dealer? Any mentioning about time/price to install it? (glass inserted in 5 sec + another 5 secs for connecting plug). Some "b...d" clipped my mirror in the tunnel, fortunately wires left hanging, but all glass has gone.

Thinking about buying original from leebmann24 (~450 pounds, it is easier for me to get it delivered home and installed myself rather than driving 10 miles to BMW dealer without mirror (I was panicking whole day on the road when that happened, as can't see nothing beside car) and wait in the queue to be told it would be +1h labour).

Update:
Called SJ BMW, was quoted 488 for glass, ordered in Germany for 449. SJ rejected to confirm part number saying it is BMW property.

To be honest as another M5 Londoner I'm concerned but not surprised...bit of a niche but £500 for the genuine thing? No wonder it gets nicked. Blame BMW pricing!

Latest update - got discount from leebmann24 for being BMW forum participant, payed 372 GBP, ordered on Mon, delivered on Sat, installed in 10 secs, lesson learned - avoiding tunnels.
