I have a 24k mileage 2017 F10 M5 which is consuming oil approximately 2000miles/litre.

Is this an acceptable level for this car, or should I be speaking to the BMW dealer I bought it from (and probably my lawyer as well) ? I previously owned an RS6 which used zero oil between services , hence the question.

Car has a FSH and was purchased from a main dealer under the Approved Used scheme.

Any comments would be appreciated.

Sounds like you’re on the cusp of it being unacceptable. Typically, from the dozens of threads I’ve read on the subject the usage ranges from ‘none’ to 1ltr every 3-4K Miles. 1ltr ever 2k seems beyond the high end.

I’ve also read that it can be improved (in some cases) by de-clogging the breather system if that’s the cause on your car. The occasional ‘Italian Tuneup’ is also a recommendation I’ve read (and adhered to myself!).

1l per 2000 miles is well within spec, BMW won't do anything until it's 1l per 1000km. Consumption varies a lot, IMO it's primarily due to the way the engine was run in.

Not for me, I would be wanting to have that looked into.

Has the oil consumption been like that since you have had the car?

How long have you owned the car, and how much mileage have you covered in that time?

Edited to add: I've owned my car from new and have covered 44,000 miles in it since March 2014. In that time, as well as the usual services, I'd added approximately four 1 litre top-ups.

Car was purchased in Feb 2018 at 17700 miles, full of oil.

I've now done 24k. It told me it needed a fill-up in mid-june at 22k, and is now down to 1/4 on the system checker. Apart from the oil, car runs superb.

Hi my 2013 went through 6 litres from 0 to 23000km. BMW investigated and changed both cylinder heads. I did another 8,000km and it wanted another litre, went back to dealer and was told this is acceptable and is stated in the handbook they will use 1 lire per 4-6000 km, same as M6

My car used a 1l top-up consistently after 12-13k miles from new, until recently at ~85k miles when it suddenly started needing one every 2k. Worried about turbo issues I asked a dealer to investigate.

The problem was caused by crankcase breathers being blocked up.

That's not 1L every 2000 miles though is it?

From your description

17700 - 22000 needed 1L (4300 miles)
22000 - 24000 is down to 25% (2000 per 0.75)

And thats assuming your mileages are spot onto the 000. The electronic dipstick is only accurate to 1/4 and even then when the engine oil is fully up to temp. My (non m5) idrive level varies by 1/4 depending on engine temp.

If you look at BMW TIS for "excess oil consumption)" the first thing they'll (probably) do is establish actual consumption. IIRC That involves dropping the oil, weighing it, etc.

I'd be making a note of actual mileage and top ups in ml.

Seems to be quite a bit of link to how the car is used too? I am sure from what I have read high oil consumption was normal if you used the car in a lot of start stop/london traffic etc.

Yeah, hence my ‘Italian tuneup’ comment earlier. If they potter around it’s not good for oil usage (probably due to clogging). Perceived wisdom is that they need a bloody good ragging pretty often. I’m happy to oblige laugh
