E39 odd airbag fault

Just got the car back after restoration, now to start on interior.
The airbag light came on for rear left passenger's side.
Car battery had gone flat so charged up, reset the fault, light came back on.
To test further i removed the airbag wires, reset the warning and light stays off.
This helpfully proves a faulty airbag but Im confused that after the reset the light stays off (returns with airbag plugged in).
Of course I coukd gleefully drive with no airbag and pass the MOT but going to replace it.
Shouldnt the light come on after a reset if its not wired in?!
