Z4M to E92 M3/F82 M4/other
Discussion
Currently I'm running two cars, a Seat Ibiza as my daily and the Z4M as a weekend toy. I'm finding that I don't have the time to properly enjoy the Z4 at the moment, and a new job with a shorter commute has got me thinking about going back to running one car.
My misssus has just bought herself a new MX-5, so I would ideally need something with a modicum of practicality - 4 seats, enough boot space for a suitcase etc. The options that immediately spring to mind are an E92 or an F82 M4.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with experience of owning either or both, that could shed a little light on the potential pitfalls. How do the running costs of each compare? Which is the more special feeling car? Is the M4 competition package worth the extra outlay? Is the M4 a better choice as a daily - creature comforts, infotainment, reliability etc?
I'm also open to any other cars I should consider, with a max budget of £40k
Thanks in advance.

FWIW, BMW Car June 2018 did a comparison of a E92 M3 Comp Pack V M4 Comp pack. The E92 belonging to a regular contributor on here, RSGrant I think is his username. It's a good article, to which as I've never owned either I can only add that my heart would say E92 M3 (currently have a E46) but if it were to be my only car then modernity, running costs, warranty of F8X generation would be a factor.
Funny enough I went from the Z4MC (x2) to an E92 M3.
The step up from the Z4MC I put it similar coming from the analogue age to the digital age. The build of the E92 is well superior and on long journeys is a world part from the Z. Well faster probably on all types of roads and conditions. However for actual thrills on the road I would stay with the Z (I always got out after a journey buzzing!) but as a day to day the M3 is the way to go especially if you have a business meeting to attend! Engine noise on both are full of character with the E92 having the edge.
In summary I would like both in my garage to be honest.........

People describe the z4m as a scalpel. The e92 m3 is not that. I think it works well as a daily as it has a split personality but there are better weekend cars out there. If you were to drive it a few times a week then ok the e92 would work well. It's an incredible machine with the S65 being the main event but flawed by weight. My main gripe was that when exploiting the S65 you ended up doing appalling speeds and when you wanted say 70% it was just a heavy car. Had I not sold mine recently I would have modified the exhaust and put it on ohlins coilovers with a decent suspension setup by TDI or Centre Gravity. I was looking at a different final drive for the car as well to help with the engines character.
I do think it worked well but coming from turbo fart boxes it took some getting used to. After a few months the torque thing was absolutely no problem to me and was a breath of fresh air after being around 4 cylinder turbo cars.
I'd have another but with the intention of performing many modifications to it. Maybe when they hit rock bottom prices which isn't long. Give it a year.
New m3 or m4 cars don't interest me in the slightest unfortunately. They sound terrible. No doubt in 10 years we will look back on them with rose tinted glasses for some bizzaire reason like we do the e92 now.
E92 costs... 85 quid of v power gave me 200 miles of bad commuting village traffic. Or 320 miles motorway.
See evolve automotive site for servicing. Oil servicing every 10 or 12k miles on the computer or 6k miles if you're not an idiot. Sparks every 3rd oil service. Swap the cabin filters yourself.
Internet will have you believe the rod bearings are made from tracing paper and disintegrate every time you start it up. Throttle actuators do fail but if you can spanner them buy new 180 quid gears from rebuild.org
Diff oil needs changing every now and again.
Fairly inexpensive really so long as you avoid stealers and don't do too many miles.
It's known as the jack of all trades and master of none.

I used to run a 520d as a daily and I had a Z4MR as my weekender, I swapped both for a E92 M3 hoping it would be a do it all car...it wasn't by any stretch for me.
The M3 just felt ordinary when used everyday and just like any other 3 series(only more thirsty and heavier), I always suggest now that the two(or more) car thing is far better than one.
Running two cars keeps one feeling special and you really appreciate it when use you it, whereas with one car you get too familiar with it, and it loses its impact very quickly.

I'm not sure I would ever describe the Z4M as a scalpel!1M would get my vote as a replacement, E92 M3 too big and heavy to enjoy, F82 M4 (like most new cars) too remote for feedback and engagement imo.
