S85 V10 and SMG III dimensions
Discussion
Hi everyone,
Looking at doing a fairly unique engine swap, I've been looking everywhere for the dimensions of the engine and trans to do my calculations from to see how practical it is but pulled a blank, particularly on the trans.
The dimensions I'm looking for are as follows,
Engine length Inc. Front drive
Engine height
Engine width @ heads
Engine width @ oil pan
Trans bell housing diameter @ engine
Trans bell housing diameter @ trans
Trans length from bell housing to end
Trans height
Trans width
It's a lot to ask but would be massively appreciated 😊

Only a concept at the moment but planning it out for swapping it into a Chevy C10 truck 67-74 years. An unusual pick but in the UK LS's with high horsepower and ok fuel economy are rare and an M5 of the V10 era is cheap to raid for parts. Plus a European V10 powered American truck just seems cool to me.
I would offer that getting it to fit is one thing but getting it wired in and running is quite another. The ECUs for the clutch, gearbox and engine are very much interconnected with the rest of the car (or is it the other way round?) and getting them to work in a standalone environment will be a challenge. I'm far from saying that it can't be done and it has been done but it's not for the faint of heart. I think there are some standalone S85 ECUs out on the market but the installed user base to draw is a small one.
I am conscious of that but I'm up for the challenge and the endless hours of troubleshooting. The main fitment issue I'm worried about is it fitting between the shock towers, I'm willing to cut the firewall and trans tunnel but messing with suspension geometry is something I don't want to get into.
OK, cool - sounds like an amazing project.
Back to your original question - have you seen https://www.m5board.com/vbulletin/e60-m5-e61-m5-to...

I’m currently installing an S85 with SMG3 into an E9x M3. The factory S85 ECU needs to see a number of items to fool it into thinking it’s in a E6x chassis such as EKP (Fuel Pump Module), fuel pressure sensor, Twin fuel pumps, CAS module to match. The amount of wiring to integrate is surprisingly little and not as bad as made out.Or you go stand-alone such as the SCS and Awron kits that are available.

Really appreciate all the info, this is planning for my first major project beyond installing a small block and 6 speed in a friends truck. Fully expecting a lot of headaches and a steep learning curve with the electronics but the finished product is perfect for what I want it to be.

I’ve had a big block in a C10 , plenty o room
