Hi All,

Just picked up my E46 M3 and i'm looking at giving it a full service as it had been sitting for a while! I've been looking at what oil to use and i've run into a bit of a dead end. I know i need to use Castrol 10W-60, other forums I've read advised I must avoid the sport version and get the normal which is fine, however I can't see there is still a sport version? If i go on Castrols website they advise "supercar" oil however & no longer stock anything else, you can get a normal oil quite easily i'm just unsure what to use?

thanks!

I've bought Castrol Edge 10 W 60 as always.
The latest version is a different color bottle and says supercar on it, but I don't see why that's an issue. Castrol confirmed it was suitable.
I too have heard BMW use Shell, but that's just a commercial deal. Don't see any reason to change for a 14 plus yr old car wink

The only oil I would use is Fuchs Titan Race Pro S 10W-60 - been using it my S54 engine (same engine) e30 for the last 4 years.

Thanks all, bloody helpful! Saved for this motor for 4 years so don’t want to mess it up with the first work I do on it! Any of you e46 M3 owners local to London or Norwich? Anyway up that channel?

Have you joined m3cutters? that’s another source of useful info and I’m sure they do meets if that’s why you asked about locals.

I've used Castrol Edge 10w60 for 11 years in mine, runs perfectly.

Check:

Worth adding that BMW no longer uses Castrol as the official oil provider, they have BMW branded oil which i'm told is made by Shell - still good oil ( i run my Ferrari on Shell Helix Ultra Racing 10w60 which is the same oil used in the F40) so could be another option, though I've always stuck to the Castrol for the M3.

Any good quality 10w60 will be fine. Read some guff online recently about how it's too heavy unless you go on track (and suggesting 5w40!) but that's just nonsense in my opinion.

There have been some offers via Amazon recently (3 x 1l 10w60 for £15) or Opie oils usually come up trumps.

Here's a question though.

If the dealer put Shell in at the last oil change, and I just topped up with my own supply of Castrol Edge, is that an issue?

AS long as it's all 10W60 you're fine.
