Treated myself to a 2014 F10 in amazing condition.

Problem (nothing to be surprised about) that the grip on the road is crap and then some.

To the point where, especially in wet conditions you cannot actually take off fast and I am not talking about super car fast, I am talking about say a 530D fast.

The tyres just spin out of control.

How do you get around this or make this better? Are winter tyre the answer? If yes, which ones? Love the car but very disheartened at not being able to really use the power frown

The F10 has so much torque low down that it seems to be harder to get the power down. I don't struggle with my E60 too much but then it has no torque which helps. Sounds better too while doing it. Lol.

Its a big heavy car, with a lot of power and massive wide tyres but they will always struggle for grip. Especially if the conditions are cold and even more so if the road is wet. It might depend on the mode selected. My 550i - nowhere near as powerful - will light up the TC light and bog down in the normal driving mode. Where as if I select the slightly more lairy mode then it will allow some slip without cutting in and bogging down. This might be what you need.

Winter tyres are good yes and I would not consider running something as big as this without them.

What tyres do you have on there now, have you checked the pressures and how much tread they have left on them.

Yes, winter tyres will help, but you will still be able to over power them. These are not the conditions to drive aggressively in. Its a pretty forgiving car to drive, but one nasty patch on the road will ruin your day! Moderate your right foot better.

I have Pirelli's with good tread (>5mm). Tyre pressure also all OK.

Had these on a modern boxster and thought they were rubbish. Get some different tyres.

Fitted Michelin Pilot Sport 4 (non run flat) on the wife's F11 - transformed the car.
Only a modest 520d msport.

PS4S on an F10 M5 are much much better, but remember its 600bhp - if you nail any rear wheel drive car with that much power in the wet its going to end in disaster wink

And worth getting a proper 4 wheel alignment done - can potentially make a huge difference.

Eventually after a couple of years you have to just go out and buy an F90
Problem solved for me this week. biggrin

Yes

Alignment also a good shout.

You might want to try different Traction Control modes too. Some aggressively cut power the moment they sense any slip. Others will let you do burnouts and then you have various levels in between.

After a couple of years in an M4 with the TC light blinking at me every time I tried to get a lick on...its a revelation being in an F90 M5. The performance jump from an M4 to an M5 shouldn't be that massive but the M5s 4wd system just gives brutal acceleration in the lower gears that the M4 could only dream of.

To the OP I did get a significant improvement in rear grip by fitting Mich PS4S tyres to the rear of my M4. The 4S tyres are worth every penny.

I owned a F10 M5 with Pirelli's and they were awful especially when it was cold and or wet. Changed to Pilot Sport 4S and a massive difference and could pull away without the little light flashing! Worth ever penny.

I’ve always had Michelin’s on mine. MPSS currently because they were cheap but have also had numerous sets of MPS4S. I also run winters (Michelin PA4). Winters will do nothing to help with traction at this time of year - they only really come into their own when it’s below or just above freezing. I’d far rather have MPSS or MPS4S in autumnal conditions and it’s generally a revelation switching back to them in early spring.

MDM mode might help but this will permit a degree of wheelslip so experiment carefully in an appropriate time/place.

The M5 will never launch like an AWD car in these conditions and I’ve been “shown” this many a time by Golf R and SQ5 drivers with points to prove. Once it’s rolling though, it’s still highly formidable.

Well done

Dont forget alignment. My mate chewed through a pair of new MPSS in 6 weeks on the back of his VXR8 because the alignment was out. Too much toe in I think. He said it was a bit skittish but just ignored it.
