Had my manual M2 Comp a year and have loved it. However, I’m realising that I only *really* love it when pressing on, and the rest of the time it doesn’t feel enough of an event and I hate the short gearing in 6th on long journeys, meaning I default to it only for ‘special’ journeys for which it isn’t special enough.

Consequently, thinking of swapping for a 918/718 Boxster or lightly used (both manual) 911. I’ll lose 18k getting rid of the M2 but then the Porsches will have depreciated too.

Simple question: will the Porsches be much more rewarding to own and will they bankrupt me...? I have various other things for bad weather, winter, family etc and don’t need 4 seats. M

Ultimately the M2 just isn’t as special as I’d hoped and is unlikely to have any long term residual (as an e46 CSL or 1M).

Not interested in a Cayman - don’t see the point of making a Boxster less enjoyable by making it a hard top, I don’t like the looks, you can’t get a sunroof and if I wanted a hard top I’d go for the 911 (with sunroof).

Be interested in thoughts.

Sorry cant help..

But 18k loss from your M2 CP? is trade only 35k? I'd hang on and maybe try and get a CS personally. But the porkers are meant to be great.

What about a Exige 380?

Yeah, how would you lose £18k? I'm sure good OG M2s are privately selling around £30k, yours (Comp) will go well above that surely. And you didn't pay much North of £50k surely?
I'd say if you're not happy do it, life is way too short smile

The mid-engine layout and lighter weight of the Boxster translates into a much nicer flow on twisty roads. If you get the 981 you'll also have a NA engine that you can rev out and a nice exhaust note. The 718 will give you the turbo thump (and lag) you're used to. When I compare my 1M to the 987 Cayman R I had, I think the Cayman was better in almost every respect as a driving tool (initial pedal feel wasn't great TBH) - the 1M felt like it had a much stronger front-end on turn-in, but that's no surprise.

Which leads to the 911. I had a 991 with rear wheel steer and it was only on certain corners that you had to be aware that it might not turn in as sharply as you wanted - railways bridges with 90 degree corners for example. Obviously if you are going for a 997 this would be amplified, but it will also add to the reward. The Cayman I had was the same generation as the 997 and it was a nicely built car. However I had 3 warranty issues on a 6 year old car, so worth researching known issues on your chosen car. Costs are going to be a step-up from the BMW, especially as the 981 and 997 will be older and will be affected by the usual age-related issues too.

The Exige is a good shout and makes the Cayman feel lardy in the corners. Handling, performance, steering and braking are all fantastic. The gear linkage on the older V6s could be better and was improved in later models with the open gear linkage. Engine is not the greatest unit in the world, but fast enough. In terms of comfort and practicality it is obviously poor, although the suspension is fairly compliant (especially if you get one with adjustable dampers).

It is mainly road driving perhaps an Elise is the better bet.

I've not owned an M2C but have driven a friends (and until recently had an M4) which overall I was impressed with (much more so than the M4). Another friend has got a 718 Boxster S manual which is a lovely car apart from the engine- nothing wrong with the performance just the noise and the boosty delivery which means as far as the engine is concerned you'd find it wanting as a non-daily driver. Careful specced (with a few choice options but not going overboard) depreciation on a Boxster/Cayman can be very low. If I were you I'd wait to see if they release a 6 cylinder (non GT4) Boxser/Cayman- or look out for a used 6 cylinder.

I think I'd look at a 981 manual GTS as they are now starting with a 4 on the used market, I've driven the 718 at the PEC and it's a fabulous car but the engine note from the GTS is fantastic, the 991 is a great car but more aloof than my old 997.2 which I think is a special car looking back and comparing but no where near as refined as the newer 991.

If it’s a second car get a go in an Exige (Silverstone Lotus are very accommodating) they are epic, if it’s your only car it’s probably a bit compromised and the Boxster would be a better option.
