Headed out earlier in my X3M (Dec 19, 2k Miles). Recently had running in service completed.
Got the following error pop up on console :

“Check Engine oil level. Engine oil level unknown. Drive moderately”.

Ran an oil level check and it reported level ok. Quick search can’t find any clues.

Anything to be concerned about?

This is fairly common when the oil has not been left for long enough to drain - takes about 15 minutes or the system throws a wobbler. Will need to go back - they can try and reset but it is likely to need another drain and refill.

Thanks for the info. Bit annoying, but will give the dealer a call tomorrow and get it booked in.

Software issue according to BMW and needs to come in for an update. Remarkable this update only became available in last 3 weeks since I had the RIS.

Affects X3M & X4M Competition in case anyone else has this problem

It's happened to mine once just after the RIS hasn't come back, fairly common issue as reported on bimmerpost, where most of the X3/4M owners are.

Happened to my one too Dec '19 car just after running in service. I measured oil on iDrive. Seems to be OK oil level no issues since.

Can I ask when this happened?

A few days after the RIS, I pulled up and the warning came on.

Sorry, meant date (roughly). I’ll be a bit annoyed if they knew this when I left mine in for RIS they n Feb

It is a common issue - there is no software update for this currently as you have been told, but can be alleviated when left to drain properly

Surely the dealer wouldn’t be telling fibs? Never....

Mid Jan, some have had it repeatedly and have had the oil drained and refilled some say they are using 7 litres of oil instead of 6.5 (so overfilling) mine came on once the invoice is for 7 litres of oil but it's not come on again so I haven't bothered doing anything, then people started talking about it being a software issue but again I haven't heard anything from the dealer about a recall or update.

7 litres is correct for this engine. There is no software update for this - the only recent software update is to update the DME for the oxy sensor which has just been launched.

There are many opinions and views on the oil level issue, this isn't a a big enough community of owners for a substantive view, bimmerpost has more details.
