Which M do I buy?
Discussion
I sold my 2017 M3 Comp last year, and whilst I don't regret it, I want another one, if that makes sense...
Well, I say another one, what actually got me on this path was the M4 Heritage Edition. I quite fancy one. And what happened was I convinced myself that it was the car for me, and then couldn't help but look at alternatives, and I know I'm just getting a bit overwhelmed by it all!
It will be my every day car, to drive to work, the gym, and the school run a few times a week (5 & 6, boys). The first question is will a 2 door car do my head in? The boys will be fine in the back once they are in, but should I be getting 4 doors? Drum roll... M3 CS. So I start looking at the M3 CS, and immediately think the M4 CS looks better, but I'm not sure I like the door cards! And of course we're back to just 2 doors again...
So if we head back over to the 3 series camp, we also then have to consider the slightly older M3 30 Jahre, which is better spec'd in some respects with 360 cams and carbon ceramic brakes as standard. But the M3 CS has a real exhaust, and the 30 Jahre is only available in Frozen paint which I know nothing about.
So you see why I am troubled right??
I know the M4 Heritage will be fabulous, but I also know that the CS, be it a 3 or a 4, is a superior car, with likely better residuals. But do I really want a CS as an everyday car? What we saying troops?
Cheers.

Curveball for you. Wife had an M4CP Conv (2017) and I've had most M cars over the years. We had a lot of issues with the last one so it was rejected and I got her an i8 instead. Her choice and being a PH I turned my nose up at it - until I drove it. What a hoot, better than any M car I've had. Handles really well, 4wd when you want it or at full pelt. She loves it, we have 3 boys, the youngest are 4 and 7. They can get in the back no issues, the dihedral doors make it really easy. So cheap to run, don't even notice the costs. Kids love it as do all their mates. End of production so depreciation may flatten. Might even go up, unlikely but who knows. Car feels modern and fresh when in full electric, noise is 'ok' when using petrol as well. Noise is becoming dissociated with performance now since EVs so depends what the noise of a NA does for you personally. For me, as a kid the louder it was meant the faster it could go. Times have changed! Still get a tingle from a downshift in my own car so will miss NA when they're gone. Otherwise, M4CS is a good shout. I've bought 4 doors in the past thinking about the kids and regretted it due to the limited times they ever go in them!

Funnily enough, I considered it, but not with a huge amount of seriousness. Perhaps I'll revisit, thanks for the post.As an M4 owner, 99.9% of time it's just me and my wife in the car. The way we have the seats, to carry passengers requires tilting and sliding the seats to get them in and again to get them out. Doing that for any journeys with children would be annoying and I'd regret not buying the M3. Had the M3 still been in production when we bought it in Dec 2019 and even though it's just the two of us, I'd probably have chosen the M3.

Most often it would be me on my own, or me and the kids. Your post has made me think that perhaps the passenger seat could be far enough forward for them to hop in the back without tilting seat - what do you think? Thanks.
I've got an M4CS and its an excellent car. I use it every so often with both my kids (3 and 4) and it works, but if it was my main car I'd go for an M3CS. I'm not sure which one I like the look of more. The M3CS was about £10k more when I was looking at cars (second hand) so that may sway your thinking...

Nice one thanks. adaM3 said:

Thanks.
If it starts too far forward, it won't clear the roof/sun visor. Hence I fold mine, then push them forward to clear the roof. Hope the photo demonstrates what I'm saying. Thanks.
