Which M car for under £40k?
Discussion
So what would be the most reliable and 'cheapest' to run M car, around say a 65 plate onwards, BMW approved?
Needs are 4 seats, and thats about it...
M6's seem alot of car for the money, M4's probably what i would love to own but would want the Comp...love the thought of the X3M (for the few days a year when the weather is bad...) but way out of price range.
Over a 4 year term, which would be the best buy for depreciation?

Comp Pack Convertible
Had mine for 2 years. The flexibility is great.
Same performance as the coupe (ok, 0.1 sec slower on a launch control run to 60!). Able to lose traction easily, but with TC on & efficient mode it’s a sensible car.
4 proper seats, good rear headroom (maybe better than the coupe?). Done a few Euro roadtrips with 3 or 4 good size people in the car.
Even with roof down, you’ve got a good luggage space (there’s even a button in the boot to Lift the roof up to allow you to load luggage into the boot).
Coupe if you want best track times and hustle into the B roads. Although, I’ve been out roof up on crap January weather and roof down on sunny, dry June days on B road runs in my convertible with Porsches, Lotus, Ferrari’s, McLaren’s and in the “real world“, the M car is able to hold it’s own for cross country pace.
It’s a lot of fun.

As you'd love to own a M4, get them closer to £30k, reasonable mileage.
Limits depreciation and saves some for winter tires, for those few bad days when you didn't buy anX3

Had you not specified, I'd have said M3.

I would not buy an X3M/X4M for bad weather unless you plan on changing the tyres. Mine was the most lethal car I have ever driven in the snow - way worse than any of my M3/M4’s! Needs are 4 seats, and thats about it...

M5 and M6 are a big step-up in refinement, the wife's M4CP felt a bit cheap inside, even with the carbon and ext. leather. For £40k though I'd go as new an M4 as poss. Rear seats are useable but I wouldn't recommend for long journeys or young kids where you need car seats. Just a pita getting them in and out. M3 wins there. I wouldn't necessarily bother with a Comp. either as difference is negligible. Fast car though, once it gets going. Initial acceleration away from lights, roundabouts etc seems slow since I've been driving elec. The wife regularly used to give me a run for my money if she was following, except on a straight but then I was in a V10! Have you considered an i8? She went from a 2017 M4CP convertible to one. I wasn't a fan but they're so much better than any M car I've had which is most of them. Just everything about it, except the noise but you soon forget about that. And in heavy traffic it's actually nice to have no noise. £40k would get you an early one. Rear seats are actually easier to get in and out of due to the dihedral doors. Peanuts to run as well. So much fun to drive! I love hers, drive it more than any other car we have.
I just got an M2 Competition, it was over 40k but not by much. Been looking for one for a little while but haven't needed a car in lockdown just started looking again and the 2.9% deal made it too tempting to ignore. Got a december registered car for much less than id previously budgeted. BMW PCP figures suggest M2 competitions will be more valuable in 3/4 years time than M4's. Although there are M4's less than 6 month old being advertised pre-reg for around 40k which must be a good £20k under RRP.
I would buy an M4 with a good spec.
I have just bought an M4 Convertible in Yas Marina Blue with Comp Pack, Carbon Pack and a whole host of other options.
This is one of the nicest cars I have owned as it is quick, comfortable and has a nice appeal to those who know what they are but without attracting the wrong attention.
