On a whole, i do like the X5M. Subtle in and about town, when everything is turned down and will happily shift along when pushed.
However, i just cannot get used to the raspy muted sound when pushing on, it's not fitting for the vehicle or to my taste.

So, has anyone taken to changing the exhaust system on their F85/F86 (i assume they are the same), to produce a deeper rumble?
I'm not looking for obnoxious levels of sound, but something a bit more meaty.

Thinking more muscle car than Ferrari.

I've seen some recommendations that a X-pipe would help, but then there are also recommendation of de-catting, changing the rear box or the down pipes, and also a need for a "tune".

I had an F86 for a short time and looked into the same. There's some really good sound clips on youtube but I made a shortlist of Hamann, Eisenmann and AC SChnizter. I discounted Supersprint, Akra and a few others for being too noisy

eisenmann was my favourite: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jbqYM_dpOJM

Problem is, there's not a mass market for these cars. you're looking at £3k minimum for a cat-back system, but it does release the V8 noise

Thank you.

Did you get the aftermarket exhaust installed on the F86 in the end?

No. Didn't gel with the car and got out of it after 5 months and now have an F82 M4 with competition pack.

I always drove with the car in sport mode (engine sport plus, suspension etc. on comfort) which lifted the sound of the exhaust (open valves) and cracked on manual shifts, although I turned back to comfort on the motorway as I found it could drone.

I had a look at aftermarket also although found they were ASBO loud but everyone's tolerance/expectation of noise is different.
