Hi all,

I recently took delivery of a low mileage, low ownership 2017 M4 Competition. Very happy with it so far apart from one little niggle that’s just raised it’s head.

Basically when I drive ‘spiritedly’ there’s a vibration noise coming from the parcel shelve area, although I can’t pin point it exactly. I’ve climbed in the back and given everything a going over but can’t see where anything might be loose.

Anyone had anything like this? The only mod to the car is a carbon lip spoiler on the boot.

Thanks all.

2018 M4 Comp.. ..Same issues for me.
Owned 7 BMWs and this is the absolute worst in terms of rattly plastic interior noise.
Really starting to get annoying.
I've put some felt tape under seat belt and isofix covers but it's not helped.
Next thing I'll get trying is the 3rd brake light.......

Have you checked it with the rear seats folded? I’ve had a couple of M’s rattle in this area and both times it was coming from the lock mechanism to re-engage the rear seats (another time from the fold out arm rest).

Mine is the same, although more around the passenger seat/door area I think. Sounds a bit like my 10 year old E92..!

It could be from around the 3rd brake light area actually..will investigate further. It’s in that general area from what I can make out when driving. Was worried initially it was between the skin of the carbon roof and the headliner.

Check it’s not something silly like the passenger seat belt

Sorry to resurrect an old thread. I have the exact same issue on my M4 Comp. The rattle goes away if you push down in the middle of the parcel shelf or put both seats down. Anyone any idea where to look to fix it please?

On mine, the finishing trim in both of the doors rattles like hell. Anyone had anything similar and found a way to stop it?

I've had various BMWs over this years, and agree that this seems the most rattly out of all of them.

I think the rock hard ride doesn't help with rattles in the F82 M4 either. The MPSS tyres that I have on my standard M4 remind me of runflats when I go over the cats eyes for example(I can't wait to change them to MPS4S). It has such an unforgiving ride, and mine is only on the 19" wheels(instead of the 20" wheels that most of the CP cars have).

Many BMW's I've had have a vibration from the rear shelf area, including my current F90 M5. This is different from the also well-known third brake light noise (which funnily enough my current car doesn't have).

If you remove the parcel shelf you'll probably find, as I did, relatively loose and stiff(ish) wiring loom which has no felt wrapping and tends to vibrate on the metal rear bulkhead. You'll perhaps also find a control module and aeriel. Frankly, the lot needs wrapping in felt.

So...

Buy some sticky-backed felt - Amazon or eBay.

Remove the parcel shelf. On my M5, and I suspect it's largely the same on other models, fold the seats down and pull off the leather trims either side of the seats (they just pull out, pull hard). You'll then find a few plastic pins that hold the shelf down at the front - remove them.

Also pull off the C pillar trims that sit on top of the rear shelf - again, these just pull off with a careful prising from the top and a firm tug. Everything is pretty robust, it's hard to actually break anything.

With the front pins and C pillar trims removed, you should be able to slide the parcel shelf forward (it clips into a slot beneath the rear window, you just need to pull it out of that). You don't need to pull it all the way out but you'll then easily be able to see what lies under there that needs insulating.

Hope that helps.

Both doors on my 2019 m4 do this, it’s driving me insane

Me too, love to know how to fix this - just the passenger side for me, can’t work out where it’s coming from, door card, speaker, handle, even glove box all seem solid on the move…

On mine it's the finishing trim. I keep meaning to take it off and see if I can stick some padding on the back of it to dampen the vibration.

Have also heard that the door lock pins can also vibrate, and sticking some padding around those also helps.

It's pretty disappointing tbh

I had a similar issue in my previous M4 comp. Check in the boot, top middle near the opening, there is a kind of hook. I used this once to hook a carrier bag and it got a little loose and due to it being plastic it rattled like a ****

Tape it down, or fix it back solid and it should be perfect.

Give it a go
