Apologies if I have missed something obvious, but I have searched and I can’t find anything.

Most of the time I listen to the radio, DAB, but occasionally I use CarPlay for Spotify. Annoyingly when I use CarPlay the car seems to think that is all I want to listen to and defaults back to CarPlay when I get back in the car, even if it was on the radio when I last used it.

I managed to correct it once, but I am not sure how, and now it has gone back to thinking CarPlay is the only thing I want again.

Does anybody know how to get it to remember what I was listing to?

TIA

I have a horrible feeling ‘they all do that sir.’ Mine certainly does and is similarly erratic.

The phone integration was, for me, the single biggest irritation discovered after buying the car. First, the almost complete lack of compatibility with Android forced me to dump a S10 Samsung that was a great bit of kit, for an iPhone 11 just so I could use Car Play etc.

If I’m using Car Play to display Waze (say), which I typically do on a run, it’s always a faff to then play anything from the car tuner or the car hard-drive; using any other iDrive function or even the reverse camera engaging defaults it back to Apple so always a ritual to get back to whatever was otherwise playing, which is really annoying.

It’s a very poor implementation in my view and it was quite a surprise to me that even when giving in and switching to (unwanted) Apple, the integration was sketchy at best.

Assumed the iDrive software would be updated in due course but nope.

After 2 years, I can work around it but intuitive and slick it is not.

Not an M-car but on my 840i it automatically connects; however pressing the 'Media' button brings up a shortcut menu to Radio/Spotify etc which you can then easily switch to and it leaves Waze running in the background. Possible mine's on a later version of iDrive if yours does something different? I can't imagine the 'switch between phone/iDrive' will be any different for either Car Play or Android Auto?

My M2C does not automatically switch to Car Play, I have to select it manually.

Have you tried programming the 1-10 presets? I have different medias set and they work perfectly.

Yep, that is exactly the issue I have, radio locally, go for a run with Waze and all it wants to do is go to CarPlay. Very annoying.

That is what I am doing with the short cut, but it does feel wrong. There must be a better way. The electronic ‘handbook’ is of no help.

I assumed they were just for radio stations?

Sadly they all seem to do this. Happened in both of my BMWs with CarPlay.

If I have the radio on, then CarPlay connects it will override whatever I was listening to. I've programmed memory buttons to radio stations so I can quickly flip back the radio after CarPlay connects.

My 2019 520d also does this. Been in twice, can’t find a fix. Given up but very annoying. If I close Spotify on my phone before I get in the car it doesn’t do it as much.

Addresses, phone numbers, display gauges, tyre pressure display, probably some more as well. All programmable via the numbered buttons.

Nope, they are shortcut keys to lots of functions.

Inversely my wife's 2019 x3 40i (which we paid a lifetime subscription for Apple car play) always struggles to open car play - go figure.

Me I am not an apple user so run Waze on the phone on it's own on a landscape rubber mount Infront of the gearstick below (on my car as well).
