Hello - wondering if anyone with any good knowledge of the engine in the X5M would be able to help.

I had a 2017 X5M and sold it earlier this year. That car averaged 16.5mpg during my ownership. I have since re-bought an 2018 X5M after a brief Q7 ownership.

This car is showing 11/12 mpg and being driven in a similar manner, on the same route as the previous car and has similar mileage, but using much more fuel. This has been sat around for a while at the dealership etc before I bought it, but cannot get my head around this.

Anyone got any suggestions? Service, flush out the fuel system / injectors?

Time of year. Consumption will be higher this time of year.

Tyres. Different brand etc.

Since a few scandals the newer car may have software that calculates consumption a bit more realistically.

Could the car have been poorly re-mapped?

The same model of car may give different mpg due to production variations. I had two 330ds. Same model, same engine. One gave a best mpg of 52, very rarely dipped below 50. The other consistently did 43. The 50+ mpg one had double the mileage of the 43mpg one.

We have a 68 reg X5M with 28k miles on the clock, last fill up on Saturday averaged 19mpg (calculated). This can raise in the summer to 24mpg on longer journeys. However if using on short journeys the onboard computer shows 11-13mpg..

If you’re based in Kent, I have BMW diagnostics tools if you wish me to scan it for you?

I had a new (then) 2018 X5M.

I got it after needing something bigger for family duties, after 2 years in an F10 M5.

X5M was significantly worse on fuel than M5 (bigger / heavier) but even I never saw anything over 16 MPG - so maybe its common?

The X5M was then replaced after 8 months by M760Li - and that averaged 22/23 being driven in the same manner.

I've recently got a 2019 Ceyanne Turbo and that is showing a decent 23/24 MPG.

That is an extremely impressive mpg for the Cayenne. The life time MPG of my X5 M50i is showing 18.9...
