Hello all,

I'm looking to move from my current pre-LCI F90 base model to a SUV, I'm considering pre-LCI X5Mc or LCI m60i. Just wondering if anyone had experiences with 2 or 3 of the models (inc M5)? Deep down I still want a true M but looking at reviews of the m60i, it's now detuned S68 with slightly slower performance wise but the new interior looks great. I do long road trip every year so the family will appreciate the better ride from m60i though it was also fine with the M5 in the past 2-3 years.
Would appreciate some experiences/opinions. Could also consider GLE63s or RSQ8/SQ8 but previously had a glc63s and hated the gearbox, Audi I don't have any experience with their performance models but I like the looks of R/SQ8 but so so on the interior.

I have an M50i (same horsepower as the M60i) with air suspension, and even on ridicoulous 22" wheels the ride is superb and extremely comfortable, helped by double glazing. I have not tried a full X5M but every review slated it for its too firm ride (it is on steel springs). However, having had an F90 M5 I do miss the ferocity of the full M engine and power delivery, and if you could live with the ride of the X5M it may be a winner, but do test drive one.

An RSQ8 would be the far more comfortable option, and the V8 in them sounds amazing, so not to be discounted.

For me the harshness of the X5M ride is far overstated. You should try one. The ferocity of the engine, however, is certainly not in question!

Having owned both M5 & X5M, the X5M, whilst a lovely place to sit, is going to feel slow (relatively) and the ride too firm. Make sure you take a long test drive before taking the plunge (I actually much preferred the previous generation X5M, the best interior and seats of any M car ever imo). Try something like a Cayenne as well and you’ll realise just how unnecessarily harsh the ride is on modern M cars.

I would say depends what you want from the car. I went from a F85 X5M to a G06 X6 M50i. Different model series but the principal is the same in that the M cars are harder by nature with the M performance being very capable but more suited to comfort/daily driving.

I'm now going back to a M car with a G90 M5, primarily due to the V8 and plug in nature (I do lots of short journeys) plus I'm not that precious around load lugging these days. The ride is the ride for me, M car or M performance, but that doesn't suit all.

I think you would need to try both to see which one you can live with.

Thanks a lot for the comments. The reason I'm changing to SUV is that I 'll need to have enough space for 3 adults at the back and also hopefully improved comfort for long drives. Will not rule out X5M just yet and will test drive the models mentioned and report my findings.

The G90 M5 is a killer combination I think and finally wide arch for M5 too - great choice! smile

I went from 2014 M6GC to 2016 Cayenne Turbo, the quality leap is large in my experience and the other great thing the dealers actually help you, Sytner where i live have dropped their standards and where they can be unhelpful they choose that path.

My immediate family have bought several cars from them, the sales is fine it's when it comes to service they drop the ball.

Anyway try a Cayenne it's a really nice place to be sat and the V8 is glorious
