does anyone know if the 2002 satnav can be upgraded simply by running the 2006 disc in the dvd drive or does it need a specialist to do this. if its just a case of putting the new disc in where can you get them from. i have seen some on e bay but i am a bit sceptical about these as they are not genuine bmw parts. what is a reasonable price for the disc?
any advice welcome

02 will be cd based nav. Dvd based from 03 onwards.
Your drive in the boot will me marked as DVD if DVD. CD based drive just says navigation system.

I bought some cheap 2006/2 update discs from ebay, non o.e, & they work fine.

Mk IV DVD Nav drive was standard from Sept 02 production.

It is plug and play.

Check Ebay usually £200 or so I think.

Yes its an easy upgrade which gives much faster route processing and better graphics, along with the desired software upgrade of perspective view.

MKIV DVD Based Units are around £350-400 on ebay, however you should be able to recouperate around the £200 mark for your MKIII.

I upgraded my 2003 DVD mark IV system to the latest rev and got 2006 maps for £25, which also enabled me to download the speed camera database. PM me if you want the details...

My 52 (sept) plate E39 530 was supplied with dvd based nav.
