Would it be quite crazy to buy a used M3 (current shape) with the new one out soon?
As a ballpark figure of £22K for a M3, how much is this likely to depreciate within the 1st 6 months of the new M3 coming out?
I appreciate it will be a different market (£22K used vs £48K+ for a new one.)

As you said, different markets. I doubt they'll take much of a knock. The new ones will be so rare for the first year and I'm sure the initial allocation (2008) is all long sold out. E46 is a super little car. Bargain of the moment, however, is an E39 M5 (or if you're wealthier a used M6).
I recently sold my e46 M3 - an absolute fantastic car. I'd say go and get one and enjoy. Also as mentioned above, for sure the first years allocation is sold out. Besides I doubt residuals will take much of a hit (although when I sold mine back to the dealer they naturally suggested it has done) - think about it, you are in the market for a £20k car, a new M3 will retail at close to £50k I guess, so even after a year or two any punter looking to buy an M3 will either be in the £15k budget (will choose your car) or £40k budget and choose the new but used M3.

I think if your worried to much about how much it's going to depreciate your probably buying it for the wrong reasons. All cars will depreciate, in general, apart from the real exotic and classic stuff.
Go and buy it, trust me you won't be dissapointed with it at all.

I dont think so, like the others have said, different market. Buy an m3 u wont regret it, i bought my e46 fully loaded m3 coupe (03 plate) last may on my 23rd birthday (had to wait till i was 23 for insurance reasons) and have enjoyed every second of it. Problem u might find tho is u u quite possibly might find urself becomming less fit, maybe even overweight! the temptations to drive EVERYWHERE are always there because the car is so much fun to drive, often im stuck with the dilemma, do i walk to my local shop (half a mile) or do i take the car and get there in 2.7 seconds! hmmm i always pick the latter! but seriously for 22k u could buy urself a very nice m3 and well specced. I personally plan to put mine up for sale around ur budget mine is like i said a 03 titanium silver fully loaded coupe, i.e smg, sat nav, tv, 19's sunroof, 55,400 miles full bmw service history, spotless condition with black nappa leather, 4 brand new continetal sport m3 tyres (official m3 tyre) brake pads just changed front and back, last service done in december 2006, so just serviced! i want £22,500 for mine and im based in west london, if ud like sum photos feel free to ask and id happily send u a bunch. Just thought id mention my car just cause ur budget falls around my asking price. Reason for sale??? im getting another lol summer is comming and im after a convertable on an 04 plate. Im not worried about the new m3 at all, plus the present one in my opinion looks miles better anyway!
