Ok - I've just about had enough of TVR ownership. Does an M5 make a good weekend car? i.e. Would it suffer if only driven on weekends and sunny days, but kept garaged at all other times?

Cheers.

Nope, but it does make a very good weekday car.

Just keep it on a trickle charger if not being used, keep the fluids topped up and if the car is well serviced once a year you should have no worries. A wise move M5 ownership.

That's basically what I was hoping for :-)

while I have a bunch of M5 fans here, could someone tell me what the trick to a drag start is in the E39 M5.

The first to second gear change is very difficult, and the engine has enough power to simply slip the clutch like mad once in second.

Second gear starts are not very kind to the car

They are suggesting full throttle clutchless gear changes. Where's my shudder smiley.

I don't think I would ever do that to a car I owned.

Sorry I tend to only really boot it in cars from 3rd gear upwards.

With all due respect I don't think that'd work for me. I think doing a drag race starting in third gear would place you somewhere behind the really determined chap in the ford ka.

Ehh.... Think Dazren meant, after having launched the car moderately, going through 1st and 2nd, he then applies WOT in 3rd gear...

Ehh.. Yep I kinda understood that . I was trying to make the point that although I wouldn't like you to think I drag my car very often, when I want to test the car out I don't think it makes much sense to use the 400 bhp like a ford ka through the first two gears. If as Dazren suggests, he NEVER uses the first two gears in anger, then he might as well get the five series in one of its other guises?

Sorry irony doesn't come across well over the internet, my appologies.

Just to clarify, first to me is a get the car rolling gear, first to second is a slow gearchange as it's a bit notchy (they all are), second is then given more stick then into third for full on banzai attack mode! As for switching to another 5 series there is not much point as I bought the car for the way it goes from 50 to 150 rather than 0 to 50.

DAZ hehe

(PS - tried the drag start once in the M5 and nothing happened other than lots of revs and a funny smell from the clutch )

Hmmm, I have to say you sound like an M5 owner now, and thats kind of what I wanted to hear. In my opinion after two years of driving the M5, and for all its ability, seems to be extreemly difficult to do the standing start thing because of the combination of a notchy first to second gearchanges an a glass clutch which is borderline not powerful enough for the car.

I hear lots of people talk about standing starts in the M5 as if there's no problem, but I don't think I've ever actually seen one in the flesh. I suspect if I talked to more owners such as yourself I would find quite a lot doing the second or third gear roll on thing but leaving standing starts alone. Hmmm.

The M5 board avoids a conventional hot start for clutchless gear changes which I'm simply not prepared to try cos I like the car too much, or opts fo an uprated clutch.

I have no problem applying full beans in 2nd. 4k-6.5k in 2nd gives a monumental shove in the back and puts you right in the zone when you change up to 3rd imo. The trick is to get her rolling gently in first to get traction, and to be FULLY off the clutch before nailing it in 2nd.
