E46 Dash Trim swap

How easy is it to change the coloured trim pieces on an E46 M3 dash and door cards eg from wood to aluminium? Looked on ebay and sellers state you just 'prise the old trim off and clip in the new', but they would say that. Anyone on here swapped trim - any problems? Plus has anyone ever used the £40 self-adhesive kits - I suspect they're complete cr@p, but stand to be corrected! Cheers in advance.
