Guys,

Browsing through the m coupe ads I was drawn to this

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/335466.htm

I dont want to write to the seller as at the moment im not in a position to buy, but my question really is, erm, what is it?!

It doesnt sound like a 2.8 conversion, but I was under the impression that all m coupes came with the 3.2 engine and that there wasnt a 'lesser' coupe model.

On the face of it, it looks very interesting and maybe even a more affordable alternative to an m coupe.

Anybody??

The Z3 Coupe was produced in 2.8 and 3.0 versions, and think this one is a conversion to make it look like an M - the rear is certainly that of a non-M version (the number plate is always mounted on the actual hatch rather than on the bumper on an M) with a quad exhaust conversion, while it does have the M (faux) air-outlets in the wings but a non-M front spoiler.

The reference to a trip computer is another give away, as no M Coupes ever had that, only the non-M versions + the sideview mirrors are not M versions.

Really, a bit of a Frankenstein love child

Edit: The add even says it's a 2.8 so clearly not an "M"

Hello there

I think it's just a regular Z3 Coupé with the "old" 2.8 straight-six (no vanos).
The Seats e.g. are regular Z3 sport seats. It also has the narrow boot lid handle, so it's an early version.

Updates obviously include exhaus system, side gills and M-Wheels. Front skirt is standard six cylinder Z3.

Regards,
Oliver

My understanding is that non-M Z3 coupes were never sold in the UK -- we only got the M version. I assume that as the one in the ad is RHD then it's from somewhere like Cyprus or Ireland.

Yeah the UK market only got the M version of the Z3 Coupe.

I hadn't heard about any RHD versions of the non M models.. I thought it they were only available in LHD hence didn't make it to the UK market.

Price it as a 2000 W import. He says first registered in 2002, that means it was first brought to the UK in 2002, so it was used abroad before being imported to the UK.
Not quite sure how he worked out its only four and half years old, even it was first registered in 2002???

Otherwise looks a nice car, I got no idea what it might be worth, but it dosnt look dear for such a rare car.

yeah its a tough call- one the one hand its a rare model, but on the other its a bit muddled what with its spec and history...

Why buy a car that has been 'chaved' to look like an M-coupe when you could just buy the real thing for similar money.

The standard 2.8 does without all the tat that has been thrown at that particular car.

The seats look horrible - the proper "M" seats are much nicer.

Steering wheel looks upside down in pic 2 - surely can't turn it that much?

And how can the owner seriously believe the 2.8 is faster than the 2 "proper" Z3M's he owns?

I'd steer well clear, either look for proper M, or a nice clean std insurable 2.8 or 3.0

Blimey - that has to be one of the most stupid things I have read on this forum.

Thanks for the laugh.

Did they not make some RHD 2.8's for the South African market?

I had a few emails with this guy as I was interested in the car.
It was apparently built as a factory order RHD in Germany in 2000, and then shipped to the UK in 2002.
I asked the seller for the chassis number as I wanted to check the service history with BMW (they had no record of the car using the plate visible in the ad, or on the plate that was on the car before). The seller never got back to me.
Draw your own conclusions!
