Hi,

Has anyone any experience of Drilled and Grooved Zimmerman discs for the front of my E36 M3 Evo?

I do a few track days so i need good brakes, but don't want full race spec as they have to be usable on the road under normal driving conditions.

I have been offered a set of Zimmerman for good money, but don't want to buy them if they are crap.

Thanks

Sorry to give you bad news but they are utter rubbish.

I warped two sets (one were replaced under warranty) just the road before I even got to the track!

Avoid.

I found OEM discs the best and don't use a hard pad on the rears as they will warp. OEM all round other than a slightly harder pad at the front. Pagids were great but stopped making them now, I am looking for a replacement. Just ruined Black Diamond pads in less than one trackday at the w/e so don't bother with them either.

Cheers

Simon

You have had a bad experience, they normally only crack or warp with hard/race pads. A Ferodo half road race pad is fine with these. Road pads should be fine too. An E30 M3 with Zim drilled and Ferodo pads with 2500 track mile under it's belt is testament to this! Zimmerman are quality and as posted elsewhere, I believe they supply BMW.

How sure are you of this?

I have also heard bad reports about the Zimmerman disks and have subsequently been told (by Munich Legends) that the OE disks are the best option.

I use Ferrodo DS2500 pads and find them to be excellent.

Have Pagid stopped making pads altogether or is it just certain ranges?

I used Zimmerman disks with Orange Pagid pads - on my 968CS - they lasted a morning at Spa. Maybe that was a poor combination to use but I never bought Zim disks again - ATE disks were a few quid more but kept on working for months & months.

I've got Zimmerman drilled discs and Pagid RS29s on my 328i, not had any problems yet, and did 150 miles on Bedford last Saturday.

That said, the standard Evo discs are much better than standard 328i ones, and most people say stick with OEM discs on an Evo.

They were supplied as approved parts for 4+ servicing a while ago. BMW logo with Zimmerman logo, but no one I know now can confirm this, so the situation may have changed. My last set of disc were in fact ATE not Zimmerman as I previously thought. But having spoken to a mate who tracks regularly with M3 E30's and E36's the reports come back fairly mixed, but as said, the x drilled Zims dont like hard pads, those running Ferrodo or Pagid seemd to be fine. It seems the Evo is better off with OE disc or post sourced ATE but hard pads grind thru these fairly quick too. No doubt we'll have a mixed bag of positives and negatives.

Agree, the Ferrodo pads are excellent. I had some spare Pagids but cant seem to get them now either for my Coupe

Just in case anyone is interested, i've got a set of Pagid RS blue pads(they have only done just one wet trackday so as new!!) for front fitment from my z3m-coupe(same front brakes as e36 evo m3) which i would sell as i've now got different calipers etc.

OEM or ATE seem to be the better option by the experience of people here then.

Is there any online shops who know there stuff that sell ATE discs? You'd be surprised the amount of stuff i've had to return to suppliers because they've sent me M3 stuff, rather than the M3 Evo stuff. Hard to get a good mail order supplier, and hard to get suppliers for quality parts on this side of the pond

Has anyone tried these x-drilled zimmermann brake discs? Are they any good, are they worth the money or should I just go for standared discs.

Hi, have you read up on or tried ebc drilled and grooved discs with yellow stuff pads? This is the current set up on my m3 evo and although I have not tracked it I can't fault them for everything else. Plus they do look awesome, cost just over 500 from Ces (front and rear discs only) not bad considering the price.
