Hi I have have a 2001 M5 and have just noticed two small patch's of bubbling under the paint. the first is inside the petrol filler flap on the seem (seems to be common). I have also noticed a small patch on the gloss black piece of trim between the front door and rear door (Is this metal ? have just had another look and it sounds like plastic when you tap it). The car is Cosmos black , How is this best treated ? Does anyone have any recommendations of places to get this fixed in SE London ? Sods law that anti corrosion warranty ran out last year.

I also have bubbling of the paint on the seam in the fuel filler area on a 2001 car. I want to get this addressed before it gets too bad. What is the best course of action, can a competent body shop sort it in place, or is it best to remove the wing and have the whole wing resprayed?

For anyone who has had this done out of warranty, what did you pay?

The fuel filler area is a common problem due to nowhere for water to run off after a storm or when the car is washed....hint open the filler door when washing the car and dry!

Getting either area fixed is not serious money, possibly a few hundred, but pick the paintshop carefully for a decent job / match.

This is for the window trim, which should just be replaced.

However, for the rust in the fuel filler area, it is a known problem, and one that BMW so far has tried to fix twice without any success on my 03/2002 M5. Now it is out of warranty and I am left fighting BMW to honour their last warranty repair, but been told that to fix it properly would involve cutting out the entire wing and grafting a new piece in, possibly at my expense... Not happy! Anyone had a fix, involving a drain in that area, or is it a question of the actual seam that simply has a construction fault?

Another area to check is the body work panel between the boot lid and the rear bumper. You can find rust causing the paint to bubble up at two points along the base of this panel.

My E39 is in having this problem fixed this week. frown

May i ask who is doing the repair and if they are any good as mine has one or two bits of bodywork that need tidying up.

Hi chaps, the way we normaly sort the problem with rust in the fule filler area is we clear out the rust and treat it with rust eating acid then re-seal the joint and paint just the inside of the fule filler area so long as the rust has'nt crept over the edge of the quater panel.
