Hi guys,

Have an E39 '01 530i. Fancy an M5, not least after being destroyed by an X3 3.0sd!!

Any advice on buying one - some previous threads about VANOS failure - what's this all about? Excuse the ignorance..

Thanks,

Steve

Steve do a search on here and you will see many posts re buying guides, potential issues, running costs and the joys of M5 ownership.

Later models make for more enjoyable ownership prospects, don't buy on mileage, look closely at bills, not just service records, each car will drive differently, look at the electrics (try all of the buttons etc), work the brakes on a test drive, look closely at the bodywork, ie rust around bootlid and fuel filler, check inner tyre wear, clutch bite and always start the car from cold!

Finally get the one you want to buy checked over on a ramp by a specialist, there are some top guys around who could save you thousands for an outlay of £200.

http://www.m5board.com/ .. is your friend.

Everything you need to know (even the neurotic Yank 'does my M5's bum look big in flip paint lilac and frost green...) is there.

Find a good one and do it! Dont be put off by all the 1001 things that could go wrong. Any car can be expensive to maintain. Car forums normally just have owners problems rather than the positive side of ownership.
Anyway you wont reget it...

...not that you seem as though you need encouragement.
