I did an oil change just yesterday using Shell full synthetic 5W 30. It's the same stuff my BMW specialist used.

Hope that helps.

If you're just topping up rather than doing a change then you'll need to find out what's already in there in order to avoid mixing different grades of oil.

The EVO takes Castrol Edge 10W 60 - Liquid gold. Nothing else is recommended.

thats bull. yes it is what the stealers use in E36 M3's, but should only be use for the later M cars.the stealers only use it because they dont stock anything else for M cars. (im talking about e46, e39, z4m, z3m - not sure about newest M's)

e36 should be using 5w30, 5w40 or 10w40

I am only stating fact. What you use is down to your personal preference.

I thought the handbook recommends using 5W-40, and that 10W-60 is what is used in E46 M3 onwards?

Correct... 10W-60 is for E46 M3's, but everyone assumes this is for every M3.

My handbook just says that BMW service will be able to reccomend the correct grade of oil for your car, so not much help.

Castrol themselves don't recommend the 10w-60 on their website:

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryI...

Neil, what's the source of you calling it a fact?

Good link, if I put my reg in for a 1998 Evo it's come back saying:

Engine EDGE SPORT 0W-40 (a,q,r) 6.0 Litres
MAGNATEC 10W-40 A3/B3

The same tool on the Mobil-1 site comes back with 0w-40 aswell.

What's the 10w-60 got going for it then chaps?

Just looked up a E46 M3 registration and it comes back with :

Engine EDGE 10W-60 (q,r) 5.5

That clears everything up smile

Hmmmm. Got me worried now lads. Just bought an EVO which was last serviced by Bexley Motor Works and they, according to the invoice, put 10/60 into it. Oops!

Personally would not worry me, If i had one i would use it in that. The old M5 loves the stuff, although it does seem to drip out of the bottom of the engine faster than you can put it in the top!

Rather that than out through the exhaust!

I'm going to try the 10w-60 at my next oil change, which will be Friday week, and see if I can notice any difference.

I use Silkolene Pro S 5W-40 on my 96 E36 M3 Evo, which the twin vanos seems to prefer.

if it's an S50 engine then Magnatec 10-40 will suffice if not wanting the expense of Edge, S52 engines Edge, although I think it used to be called something else, SLX. Edge is a superior product and will do no harm, but possible wasted in an S50.
