Contemplating an M6 or S5. Are there any of you guys who have moved from one to the other of experienced either ?

Would expect the M6 to be the winner by a mile ???

The S5, as far as I know, is just an Audi S4 in a pretty body. It has the 4.2 FSI V8 engine with develops 344bhp.

The M6 on the other hand, whilsts not as good looking, has a 500bhp 5.0 v10 engine, amazing technology, limosuine luxury and performance that will stun you everytime you plant your right foot.

I think the E46 M3 will see off the Audi S5 too.

Nearly the right answer here...

Had an A5 and with it's offset pedals, just ended up with a bad back from it, nice place to sit in though and very 'pretty' looking...if that floats your boat..

Not had an M6 but currently in an M5 and they are worlds apart (S5 to the M that is) especially when comparing engines, the S5 has the detuned RS4 engine if you like and just will not compare considering I've had the pleasure of the RS4 and the V10 just 'is' cloud9

Hope this helps

I had a race with an S6 in my e46 M3 the other day... There was very little difference in straight line performance, i reckon the M3 has the edge tho. I guess my M hasn't lost that many horses.

I haven't driven either S5 or M6, but if i was in your position it would be a no brainer! M6!!!!

If you like driving, buy the M5.

The S5 makes no sensne what so ever, it is a comfortable (if you go auto) crusier, nothing more.
So if you really want the Audi buy the 3.0tdi or 2.0T and enjoy it for what it is, not for what you want it to be.

OK - from someone who has just bought an M6 (pick up TOMORROW!!!) and an S5.

I went and considered an S5 briefly, I really like the shape and thought it was actually a very nice car. However, it is worlds away from an M6 and should really be considered against a 650i rather than an M6. The M6 I also compared against a 996TT... wantign that level of perfomance and dynamics you can see why the S5 was dropped quickly.

INTERIOR - The 6 series interior, especially in M6 guisse is superb, with all the right gadgets and full leather it's a luxurious place to be. I can't think of a toy it's missing and with full ipod integation in the iDrive, bluetooth on the iphone and phonebook upload, voice control, TV, Logic 7 stereo, Heads up display, heated memory seats, etc., it's very well appointed. I don't know of another car that allows you to customise settings, lighting, environmentals to the point the M6 does and it's nice to have other things to play with when stuck in traffic :-)

EXTERIOR - I like the M6 as much as the S5 (ok, more as I know what it is!)although admit to most bystanders the S5 looks more elegant. To most petrolheads they prefer the exclusivity of the M6. The 6 will always be an acquired taste, I've always like them since the day they came out - I know petrolhead friends of mine who hate the looks to this day.

ENGINE - No contest, why buy a detuned ANYTHING... if you're going to have a juicy car then don't compromise and the V10 is sublime. The sound is great and switching between 400 and 500bhp modes is really like getting 2 cars for the price of one... the first will dice with S5s and kick them all over the shop, the second will do the same but with 911s...

HANDLING - No contest... S5 not well rated, better than previous Audis but still compromised whereas the M6 is fantastic and thanks to electronics relatively tuneable to your own requirements/mood of the day.

If you want a car that is more dynamic than a 650i then maybe the S5 will come out on top, maybe also if you want a more luxurious 330ci.

Only an S5 with an RS6 engine and some serious work on handling would really be comparable to the M6.

RESIDUALS - M6 has taken one royal spanking along with most others... however at 85k+ (usually nearer 88k fully specced) the M6 at mid 30's is amazing value - AUC car with decent specification will get you a 55 car for low 30's, 06 for mid 30's. S5 I will imagine will lose more as they're not a halo model but are too impractical/inefficient for the everyman.

RUNNING - I'd expect the Audi to be cheaper to run than the M6 in terms of servicing, tyres and the like. Again you're not really comparing apples with apples as one is a low-volume build designed to compete in supercar territory.

All in all I think the M6 would easily outweigh the S5 in every way except losing a little practicality and being more pricey to run.

Evo mag ran an S5 and gave it an excellent end of term report - car grew on them, handling pretty good, engine pretty much as good as RS4 up to 6,000.

Other factors not mentioned yet: space in back, S5 is very tight; gearbox, you either love or hate SMG, personally it takes all M5/M6 off my shortlist; consumption/range, appalling in M6.

Does a year-old E92 M3 appeal? (biased here, I am an M3 driver).

I don't know what it is but something just doesn't float my boat about the new M3... the old one looked special (although I feel getting a little dated now)... the new one just...well...doesn't... the exhaust at the back makes it look a bit "add-on" too

No offence to e92 M3 owners... I'm sure you can tell me how damn ugly and impractical the M6 is all day long :-D

SMG - LOVE IT!! Can only imagine how great DCT must be.

Without wishing to sound churlish - asking whether an M car or an Audi is better on an M car forum is hardly likely to result in a resounding vote for the Audi.

Turkeys voting for christmas springs to mind.....

I have a DCT and I think it is fantastic - very quick changes, the differences from SMG are that it works well in auto too if you like that, and that it can be smooth as well as quick if that is the way you want it, while keeping your right foot planted for upchanges (interestingly, there is no difference in acceleration times between S1 and S6, just smooth versus giving you a thump).

The S5 is stil a great car and I'm sure looking from the bedroom window to the drive you'd still be pleased you bought one... in black as it's the only colour that works for those that I'e seen.

HOWEVER... you will always remember how much bang (and toys) you would have got for your money and I think that's too much of an if...

of course and the end of the year you might cheer yourself up knowing that the "old thumper" has saved you money compared to the rather higher maintenance mistress of the M6.

Whatever you deicde on let's see some pics... I'll get some of mine on here later today :-) No guessing why I'm up so early...EXCITED!!! :-D
