Posted this on Mtorque (user Feldspar) and thought I would add it here. As GoM asked in the tyre thread.

Can I just add I too hve followed the same path, picking up the new M3 on Tuesday. Now because of working away from home I only managed 30 miles drive time so far.

I think its a little scarey that only just read Flatpopely's review that 2 people who have never met or even know each other could come up with the same opinions.

The car is plainer and less mean and I doubt I will ever look and say wow as I did with the E46, you know on sunny days with a low sun
catching the car in that certain way.

I would also add the bonnent " lunchbox" and the rake of the windscreen gives the impression of driving an armoured car.

It is a design shift and not an evolution of the E46 IMO

As Flatpopely said the power is there but delivery is much smoother
I dont feel the same shove in the back nor can I get my wifes head to bounce off the headrest (only 30 miles so summat to work on there).

Its much quiter nowere near as raucous as the E46
and I'm not so sure thats a good thing as yet.

It may be a crap analogy but think of the film twins Arnie and Deveto

DCT box is so far amazing. Previous car was a manual and I never did get the channce to drive an SMG.

In auto or D mode the shifts are smooth but noticeable

In M mode the upshifts are near seemless and no need to lift slightly too. (only odd thing is the tacho - there is no sweep of the dial - it just moves in steps.

So far I have only pootled back from the dealer and a few miles in the evening. With a few quick blasts in M mode.

Only embarassing thing so far was starting the car, family onboard.

Key in dash press start - lights on no engine start.

Press start - we sit in darkness.

key out and back in press start - repeat as above.

Think back to what salesguy said. Ahh key in foot on brake. paperbag

So am I glad I made the change - Yes But thats me.

I agree with the 330 335 thinking too. Just a pity we will never see a CSL

Feel free to debate biggrin

Got to agree with the noise. I've never really felt the need to change any of my previous cars from standard but I keep getting the desire to by a new pipe for the M3. It does sound good with the window slightly down and you're pushing it but too quiet otherwise.

I did feel the car was a little "average" on looks and performance at first but it did what I wanted as a daily driver and doesn't attract unwanted attention. It only started to grow on me when I started playing with the setup buttons and using the M button alot more. It is a very rev happy motor and you need to use them to make the most of it. This can feel as if you're thrashing it too hard at first.

Like quite a few other posts on here have mentioned I think BMW could have done more looks wise, noise wise and spent more time on the interior to make it feel more special. The RS4 and C63 AMG have great looking seats and even my old M3 Evo had leather Recaros as standard.

The key thing for me is that it's reliable, has the necessary day to day toys on board, you can throw a decent amount in the boot and when things permit.... go like the clappers, handle well and put a smile on your face.

Hope you can get some more miles under your belt soon Overhaulin. Enjoy.

Re noise, do you have a saloon or coupe? Had the opportunity to drive them back to back a couple of days ago, and the saloon has much less induction noise. To me, the coupe sounds great even at relatively low revs once you get to half throttle or more.

I have not seen the tacho move in steps, that sounds like a fault??

I would agree, mine doesn't move in steps either.

Thanks for the replies on the tacho. It did strike me as odd. the only why I can descibe it is
say your in 3rd at 4000 rpm change up to 4th and the "hand "drops to say 3500 rpm in the manner a second hand on a watch moves. Looks like a trip back to the dealer when I get back then.

I have grown to really like the look of my E92. It has some great edges that catch the light (mine is white) and it is now becoming accepted as a good looker by many more people than when it was new. I think the world is catching up!

It is a far more handsome car than the (once beautiful) E46. When you see what Duller and Rahal-Letterman have done to the racers, you'll get my drift.

It is a grear daily drive car with 420bhp! Sheesh, the 996 turbo when launched had the same power and look at the epoch making car that was...

E92 = a significant jump up the scale in every respect from the lovely E46.

Enjoy it.
