Supercharger / Turbo - Z3m Roadster
Discussion
Hi, I have a z3m roadster - 60k, drive it about 2 months of the year as live abroad and want to know if its worthwhile getting a supercharger / Turbo fitted to it. I basically have no plans to sell the car for the next few years and want to spend some money to modify it as I have never really had a project car, or been financially able to do it.
Can someone advise on the costs, or if it is even possible. i want to try and get it as close to 400 bhp if this is possible.
Its the kid in me thats wanting to do it.
Car currently has exhaust and induction kit, just want to make it rediculous if possible without ruining the BMW reliability. Previously had a TVR which was alot quicker in straight line but broke all the time.
Thanks
Matt

Is it a S50 or S54 engine?
Its possible to supercharge the s54, probably gonna cost £6K ish I think. Plenty of people around who would do that. The only people I believe who do superchargers for the S50 are G-Power in Germany, they are more expensive I think, £10K ish.
Obviously depends what you are prepared to spend and where you live!!
You better make sure you comprehensively sort out the brakes and handling first or you'll be a dead man! Add £2K to do that properly.....
Good luck whatever you decide. :-)

Hi jason,
Its a S50, I notice you have done alot to your car, what sort of money you think would be looking at to get it to your level.
Not really prepared to through 10k at it.
Cheers

at a guess i would of thought jason has spent at least 10k+Its a S50, I notice you have done alot to your car, what sort of money you think would be looking at to get it to your level.

his wheels must be 2.5 grand of lovelyness!
The supercharged white S50B32 featured in the Dec 2008 BMW Car magazine has 420bhp and 350lb ft torque via a Procharger C2SC Supercharger, new intercooler, new ECU and custom Plenum Chamber.
Car runs on 19 inch BBS Challenge Wheels
Suspension KW 3's
Brakes AP six pot and 343mm front disks.
Thorney Motorsport added the ECu plus brakes and suspension....no ide who fitted the Supercharger plus plenum etc.

Mtomlin,
Errr well I have spent about 15-16K to date on all the work. If you have an S50 you will struggle to go the forced induction route I think. I spoke to a lot of people who carry out the conversions and for various reasons (some technical)no one has the kits for the S50, except G-Power in Germany if they still make them.
What I will say though is perhaps do some of the work I have done and it totally transforms the character of the car from docile (relatively speaking) to really quite aggressive in terms of engine characteristics and handling etc. My car is not a daily drive but could be easily as its still quite happy pulling low rpms in any gear. Does have a nice (IMHO) lumpy idle owing to the cams.
Evolve in Luton have done all of the work to mine and would highly recommend them for honest advice etc. If you want ot make it snappier in a straight line change the diff, get a good quality remap, good quality exhaust, good quality induction kit (Simota or Gruppe M)lightweight flywheel. That wont brake the bank and you'll probably see about 310-320 genuine bhp. Then spend the balance on sorting the brakes and handling because they need it!!
With regards the white supercharged z3m in the BMW mag mentioned the guy who owns it bought it from a garage with the supercharger already fitted. Unfortunately he has I believe no idea who, when or where it was fitted. He suspects it was a one off application.
Any way mate hope that helps!!! Get yourself to Sussex and come try mine if you are around this neck of the woods.
Cheers

I think there are quite a few conversions for the S50/54, thought the white one isn't that well documented. I know Gary, the owner of the white car who I'm sure would be happy to answer a few questions if you're serious. The BMW mags seem to have adverts by most of the sellers and I'd think a few people might do deals in the current climate.
I'd can thoroughly recommend ESS superchargers, as mine's been on for about 5 years now (not on an M) and the only issues with the car have been BMW bits!
FWIW, I know DA Motorsport offer conversions to a claimed 1000 bhp, using dustbin lid sized turbo's, but personally prefer the linear torque of my blown 6.
I think you should be able to do quite a lot for c£5k.

There are plenty of conversions for the S54 but not the S50, I believe owing to the thinner tolerances between cylinder bores making overheating and possible meltdown a real possibility! I could be wrong but I looked long and hard and never found a real, reliable and available S50 kit.....Otherwise I'd be running one myself now!
Love to know if someone has one??

Mtomlin,
Yes I do mate. It was making about 290bhp before which is about right for a standard S50, they never really made 321bhp (sure others will agree). Now it makes over 350bhp usually about 353-358bhp. Every time on the same dyno by a very reputable firm. Torque is 280flbs which by forced induction terms isnt impressive but given the mods its good enough.
Its probably 60-65bhp increase but what makes the biggest impression is the attitude and the way it delivers it!! Much more mental, LOUD and really gives the racelogic traction control a workout.
PM me with your email and I'll get you a couple of video clips soon and you can see what I mean....
Cheers

CA Automotive do one, but it's something like £7.5k plus fitting. Crazy, but then again nothing unusual for their pricing. I really fancy one myself, used to have an ESS Supercharged Z4, but they don't do a S50 kit Love to know if someone has one??

My brother has the original G-Power Evo III Z3MCoupe (S50B32) with 510Bhp and 560Nm at 1.1 bar
The car has been utterly reliable over the last 15k miles - it has covered 30k from new.
Mods to the engine:
- 9.1 compression pistons alongside custom rods
- SS Headgasket
- ASA clutched supercharger
- Custom air-to-water charge cooled intake
- Custom water-to-air cooler
- Alfa-N engine management
- Bailey dump valve
- Boost controller
- Hartge 6-branch SS headers
- 100 cell race cats
There is tons of other stuff which has been modified on the car such as suspension, brakes, interior, wheels etc. It was featured in Total BMW recently - it is Diamant Schwartz, with AS Setups decals on the side and 19" Breyton wheels.

Hi, the car referred to in this quote is mine. Just wanted to correct a couple of things. Thorney didn't do the ECU as that was done at the time of the SC install (previous owner). The mag got that and a couple of other minor details not quite right but essentially accurate.Car runs on 19 inch BBS Challenge Wheels

I can recommend the ProCharger as it has a self contained sump so no plumbing it into the engine oil system.
It is really a lot of fun. At the moment it is getting some intermittent faults diagnosed and hopefully fixed, then to start planning the next round of upgrades / mods. LOL

Im looking at the Dinan supercharge package. Would really love to see a supercharged m in the flesh or at least have a chat with an owner who could advise me on before and after feel, maintenance, problems etc...
Thanks in advance
Dan
I have a supercharged S50B32 engine in my E30 M3
( http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/gassing/topic.asp?h=0...).
If you go this route I advise you to change your pistons to a low comp
forged set.
