I've had my M5 for 250 miles now or 2 tanks of petrol.
On saturday a warning light came on telling me that i am low on oil.
I went to get a top up at Halfords, but turns out it's a very hot running type and they do not stock it.
Went to the dealer i bought it from, where they have told me that they don't keep it either but the branch about 30 mins away from me does, bu it closes in 30 minutes. (1 out of 10 points for customer service by the way... They could have at least offered to call that branch and tell them I am on my way to them so please hang on 5-10 extra minutes)

Anyway... at £20 per litre and 1 litre every 2 tanks of fuel, it's a little bit shocking...
I realise that I should expect supercar running costs with a supercar engine, but just wanted to find out if that's nomral.

I can geet over the extra cost, but the indignity of having to carry a can of oil in the boot is harder to swallow... The way I see it, if a car needs to carry oil with it, there is something wrong with the engine.

I would say that is definately excessive i'd get it checked out under warranty.

I would also suggest there is something wrong with its oil holding bit if it only holds 1 litre of oil!!!

No, no, it has about a litre range between max level and min level.

So once it beeps at me that the oil is low, I need to top it up by about a litre.

Is it a new car or used? Sounds like if used it may not have been run in gently?

Hopefully they didn't supply the car to you topped up with oil and it hasn't burnt that much in 250 miles. If it needs another litre in another 250 miles I'd seriously look into your legal rights regarding rejecting the car.

PS 125 miles per tank? That's some fuel consumption too!

I just find it hard to resist driving it like a to55er still. I will hopefully go back to a more mature driving style in another couple of tnanks... Well maybe 4 or 5 smile

It's used.
I will see how I get on in the next couple of tanks then.

If it was serviced before it was sold, chances are the dealer's filled it to the bare minimum to stop the light from coming on

Tight, but there you go. If the light comes on again a couple couple of weeks after you last topped it up to the maximum, then you can start getting worried

I dont think 1 litre of oil use is too bad after 250miles of thrashing IMO(must have been hard driving to only get 250miles to two big tanks of fuel).

Some engines do use a bit of oil by design, and often more when revved and worked harder. But well done for using it for what its made for! smile

How many miles has it done?

Of course, it could be that the dealer gave it to you with the oil level just on the cusp of the minimum and your enthusiastic driving has tipped it over the edge, in which case you've used bugger all oil smile

Thats a hell of a lot of oil... I use 0.5ltrs per 1k miles in my old Fiat Coupe Turbo and thats got a reputation of high oil usage... 1ltr per 250miles ..

I'd have a look at your drive in the morning maybe the sump plug hasnt been torqued up correctly/loose or maybe its leaking oil through the oil pump or some gasket has had it.
It its losing oil/burning oil then boy thats had an exceptionally hard life & I'd question its ability to pass an MOT on emmissions + if it is buring oil that can damage your cats... and im pretty confident 2 new E60 M5 cats might be somewhere around the £2k mark parts alone...

If it's a brand new M5, I would suggest the heads on the M5 are ported/polished from the factory.
It will drink oil for the first 1000 miles or so until the head is glazed with oil again.

I had this with a race engine a few years ago, but then again I could be wrong.

Audis acceptable oil use is 1 litre every 1000 miles.
Same with the MINI Cooper S.

So if you've been ragging it everywhere i wouldn't be suprised it's using oil.

Drive it sensibly and see how it uses the oil then, i suspect if it's had an easy life it'll use ~1 litre every 1000 miles.

The oil was near max when i picked it up from the dealer.
I can only check the level via the on board computer.
I couldn't find the dipstick under teh bonnet (embarassed).
it's done 48k miles, will see how i get on from here.
Would love to hear what the actual e60 M5 owners get though.

It makes sense. I was driving it sensibly between the warning light and getting hold of some oil it did not seem to go down any further.

Once you've done some miles in it the oil use will virtually stop.

When my A2 went past 60K Miles it stopped using all almost completely, enough to not require a top up between services.

Are there any inherent probs with these engines? I was stuck in traffic behind one this weekend and even when it wasnt pressing on it was smoking a lot.

Don't be, if it's anything like some Mercs it probably doesn't have one!

That is quite heavy oil consumption for any engine if it really was topped up, and speak's a lot for the car's life leading up to your stewardship. I'd have a look to see if it's leaking anywhere but make sure you register your disquiet with the dealer in the unlikely event of it going pop
