I feel your pain mate! It makes me look like a learner! I just pull away in 2nd all the time now! There's a decent topic about it on the Z4 forum!

I removed the CDV on my 325 - made sod all difference. I think the dual mass flywheel and self adjusting clutch are the real problem.

Mike. Go on to the Z4forum and search for the CDV removal threads which will tell you where you can get the parts/work done in the UK.

I got a local indi to replace mine with a blank that I got from the states. Agreed there's no real benefit to the blank other than maybe warranty issues if they spot it's been removed.

The indi charged me £20 to sort it. Not worth getting your hands dirty. There's a 'How To' on z4-forum if you're feeling the crunch though.

I am sick to death after 6 weeks of ownership of my Z4M Roadster of the terribly jerky 1st to 2nd gearchange on medium to hard acceleration. I've done a lot of research & decided it is the dreaded CDV restrictor valve just before the clutch slave cylinder causing this problem - & premature clutch wear I would guess...

I don't wish to replace the valve with a modified one - I just want to remove it completely then re-bleed the clutch line.

However, I can see the little blighter from the engine bay on the NSF but only get one hand to it which makes bleeding impossible from above. Does anybody know if this valve is accessible from below without needing a hydraulic lift or removing the undertray?

I don't really want to pay £100+ for a simple 15 min job!
It's much easier to do underneath the car, you'll need to remove a skid plate too, that's about 6 blots. Then it's just a case of clampling the flex hose with mole grips, undoing the the CDV from the line with a couple of spanners, bleeding and then reconnecting line. It's a easy job if you can get under the car.
I'm no spanner monkey either

CDV is coming off in the next hour from a local Indy.

(Edited 90 mins latersmile Sadly, despite trying 3 local garages in the last hour, none could commit themselves to doing this simple job within the next 2 weeks. Little jobs like this don't generate money & it appears that due to the "credit crunch" the small local garages are making a mint - but only take on jobs that pay £500 or more - usually MOT repairs for those who can least afford it in VERY rural areas like mine.

Seems to me to be similar to the greed of the bankers that caused this problem - profiteering is it....?

Still, it's their financial loss - not mine. Tomorrow I'll put my car on ramps in the garage & do it myself - whatever the grief. Unbelievable really. I hope all garages go bust "Winkers one & all"!
Mike, where abouts in the South-East are you based? My mechanic (BMW M specialist with an e34 M5 and Skyline himself) is between Braintree, Colchester & Sudbury if it'll help - he charges about £45/hour.

As an aside, what's the clutch delay valve for i.e. what problem does it solve?

It delays the disengagement of the clutch so that when you're trying to do medium to fast starts it doesn't engage the clutch until you're halfway through planting the trottle - which them leads to an embarassing kangarooing along the road until you either lift off or change into 3rd.

It does this by restricting the flow of clutch fluid to the cylinder so that the clutch disengages at a much slower rate.

Deleting or modifying this give you back 'normal' operation between clutch pedal and clutch.

I was kangarooing at almost every set of lights for the first week after I got the car, but now it's just the odd time when I'm being lazy.

Mike, thanks for the valuable information. Think I'm going to get mine done too you can actually feel the damage being done to the clutch when scuttling around town.

Let us know what BMW customer services say would be keen to know.

I'm intrigued to know what you think BMW Customer Services would want to do about it. If I were them, I'd tell you to fk off (I'm inclined to believe a lot of people would wink). They put it there for a reason, it was there when you bought the car, it's not a fault with it so why would they want to do anything about it?

....and you were right!

The point of a forum like this is to share experiences, problems and opinions - this thread may have been useful to others in the future but now that a lot of the posts have been deleted it makes no sense.

Mike - If you don't like others expressing an opinion that differs from your own (I dare say that most do!) or engaging in a bit of banter then don't start a thread in the first place and don't air your vitriolic views on other threads......

Can't believe he deleted his post this one was actually very useful. People need to stop taking him so seriously, it is quite clear that he says what he feels at the time.... No need for people to come in here just to slag the guy off he does actually provide useful info.

Lay off!!

I agree with you !!!

When i first started reading mikes post , i must say i was surprised that it was on a usefull subject was and would help others !
BUT it did not take mike very long at all to insult people or companies because he did not get free help and advice !!!

I only replied and not because mike has had some good old (fun) banter with me on other posts !
It was the fact he said he hopes all garages go bust and called them not very nice names , and then he slagged off a girl from customers services for not being basically a mastertech for bmw !

I dont think i have looked at any threads with mikes involvement without him being dam right rude to pretty much most of the british public in some way or form !

Mike grow up stop deleting posts as this will not gain you any respect !
Dont post insults if you can not take them !
Try and post postive things to help people for a change and you will be surprised how different the replies will be !

chill out and cheer up in the hard times my friend biggrin

I, as you would, get mightily pissed off with the comments you make. At my age I don't need respect. I merely try to help others. In the next hour my car is going to Cooper Norwich to prove the disastrous clutch problem. BMW UK have taken the problem seriously today. BMW Munich (an Australian) today denied any problem.

Am I deranged? The problem is there quite plainly to see at http://www.zeckhausen.com/cdv.htm.....

Chaps, can we at least keep this forum free from the increasingly tedious name calling and general handbags at dawn that Pistonheads has become? Agree to disagree or whatever. We're talking about CDVs not each other. Thanks.
