Hello, looking to buy a weekend toy on a budget of 10-12k and after much deliberating I am beginning to think that a Z3 coupe might be the car for me. Can anyone advise what they are like to drive, and what I need to look out for? Also, is a 12k budget realistic for one in good nick?!

Any help appreciated.

ps does the roadster drive that differently??

They can be a handful to drive and on standard suspension are not the last word in handling. They are quite involving however so it depends what you want to go for.

For that budget you are looking at an S50. Make sure there are no vanos issues. This is not as big an issue as its made to be but be sure its not on its way out before you buy.

Other major thing is to check the boot floor where the diff mounts. They can tear away leaving a large rip in the boot floor.

Other wise just general condition.

I am about to prep mine for sale. Was going to put it up for not much over 12K. It's a black s50 coupe, completely original, garaged most it's life and well cared for. PM me if you want to know more. I have decided to sell as I don't use it enough, and that's just plain wrong.

Unless you are taking it on a track then standard suspension, brakes etc are more than enough. A good tool for track days, although I haven't tracked mine, I drove some before I got it. Easy to upgrade if you get the bug.

Coupe chassis is far superior to rag top, but rag tops can be improved with body braces and strut brace. I've had mine near 5 years, love it and it's not missed a beat. I am not bias or anything honest.smile
