M3 E46 - Annual Servicing Budget
Discussion
So - I'm thinking of getting a M3 E46 coupe (not SMG) probably with a budget of 14~15K and would like peoples opinions on what a reasonable annual budget would be for maintenance and another contingency budget for those other things that happen like clutch etc..
My annual milage is 12~15K.
Thanks.

Hi,My annual milage is 12~15K.
Thanks.
Local BMW quoted £600 for the big service, so thats a maximum. Car will do up to 15000 between services, depending how its driven.
tyres are about £600 a set. Dont know how long they last. ive done 6000 miles on a set on Continentals and they have loads left on them.
mine has just had new front brake discs/ pads / sensors at 44000 miles and thats about £470 plus fitting.
Depends on if you use a main agent or go to a specialist.
I've been using a main agent - just had an oil service done which was £213. Prior to that, around 13k miles ago, I have an Inspection serice (was insp 1) which was £892 (which I think was dear! Insp 2 will be around that price).
Tyres - I'm looking at tyres at the mo, factory fit Conti's seem to be around £200 a rear (I'm not looking at fronts). Michelin PS2's are a little more expensive but are said to be better tyres. Not sure what fronts cost as I've not replaced them for ages!
I would imagine you could save a few quid (and possibly get BETTER service) by going to a good specialist. You could probably get cheaper tyres too, but you'd have to give on the brand.
The question has been asked a few times with conflicting opinions so might be advisable to do a search.
Cheers

Thanks so far guys !Not quite sure why people pay a grand a year for the additional warrenty though..
The regular failures don't really seem to justify it.

I think the reason is that if you do have a significant fault/part failure on one of these cars, the bill can quickly turn into a frightening amount with the labour rate of main dealers. If you don't use main dealers and use an independant, the bills will be a lot cheaper, but parts can still have horrific price tags. The regular failures don't really seem to justify it.
My M3 is an AUC car. I plan to use main stealers for scheduled servicing but won't let them do ANYTHING outside this. If they tell me it needs other stuff doing which is not covered by warranty then I'll get that done by an independant. That way I'll save money, the car will have FBMWSH when I come to sell it, and they can't wiggle out of warranty work/good will gesture as it will only have been serviced within the main dealer network. I'm still going to keep renewing the yearly warranty as an insurance policy though.

Or get them trade and fit them yourself Jamie if your a member of costco's then the prices for Ps'2 can be very good !! Or black circle the other tyre wholesale company who's name i have forgot that are based in scotland and also sell jap parts ?? Someone on here will know!
I can remember a couple of years back ringing many tyre wholesales when looking to buy Csl sizes for my own car asking how comes costco can supply and fit Ps'2 for less than i could buy them trade!
The Answer was that when costco have deals on they are really lossing money on them as a loss leader and costco is in partnership with Michelin
Or This comes with a warning ! I sell Rears Ps'2 £226+vat or Latest Goodyear F1's Around £179 +vat (without checking the f1's might be less) for M3's which is what it costs me ! But only if the car is either in for paint , detail or wheel refurb!!
Have done this for many M3 owners but been caught out with people ringing asking for just tyres at that price ! I can only really fit them for free and sell them for trade when other work is being carried out and of course when having wheel refurb too !!
Another line would be to ring lepsons as they have just opened this weekend a seperate unit just suppling tyres and fitting and the bonus is if they damage them then refurbed for free!!
Not sure how good their prices are yet ??
Hope this helps

He's back! Please don't leave us again Mike, the forum was becoming far too civil.
No offense to anyone on Falkens, it's a good, middle end performance tyre, but in your case I assume it's so that your wife won't raise an eyebrow when she's having a look over the monthly bills? Try the new conti 3's or PS2's. I know car detailing products get you irate, so you could always shine them up with some of the froth that collects round your mouth after a regular forum outing.

You are taking the absolute Michael Mr kds keltec!!! Put a pair of 255 Falken 452's on the rear of your Z4M for approx £220 for the pair, delivered to your door. Then pay approx £40 for a local tyre factor to fit & balance them!! What planet are you on in this day & age? You & your dad are taking the piss & ripping your customers off big time. Perhaps Rogue Traders should pay you a visit? I'll see what I can do on that score...

I have 4 different PH members email me direct saying "loving the banter between mike and me but where has he gone".
And one saying he is back ...
You are famous my friend,
As i have just fitted the above tyres for M3 owners i can and will quote that the Ps'2 are the same price as i paid for them , with me personally showing the customer the original bill from the tyre supplier to me , and also had 4 wheel refurb at trade price too..
This does not mean a large tyre company can not bulk order a brand and size cheaper as they do ..
Go away and get a real quote for mich Ps'2 for the rear of a M3 fitted not cheaper tyres , with the wheels cleaned and waxed for that price !
Then come back and post the price please ..
Up until now i charge the wheel refurb from lepsons to all my customers at the trade price, which is what i pay for them not retail, and then i remove them for free , take them over to lepsons, wax inside and out after refurb , refit them for free , torque the wheel bolts and set the tyre pressures ..
The warning was because as you can not read please dont email / ring asking for that price for just doing the tyres !
I can and will only do that if the car is in here for other work ...
Please contact rogue traders and do it soon , i am sure i can detail their nice black bike or even feed their leathers too ...
Here is the link to my address so rogue traders can find the workshop

I guess he's on the same planet Martin Brundle was on when he drove for Ferrari procuring a free F355 on the way which you brought from his dealership and sold on very quickly afterwards due to timing belt requiring changing ever 6000 mile at a cost of £6000........"Or This comes with a warning ! Personally, I wouldn'd do more than 8000-10000 miles between services in a performance car such as an M3.Local BMW quoted £600 for the big service, so thats a maximum. Car will do up to 15000 between services, depending how its driven.

Thing is i have the BBC here last year to drop off some filming equipment , it was to film a complete machine polish (correction) on a Black Aston DB9..
The whole filming and machine polish took 7 days and the film has been time lapsed by the bbc editting room to just over 6 minutes
(running at 5000 times faster now)
Now waiting for voice over !
No rogue traders in sight yet
I will make sure mike gets the first viewing before its on my website ..
Mike stop messing up members threads .
I posted to a member on this thread as we have allready been in contact and it might of helpped him !
If you want to have a rant at me even thou you have never met me , spoke to me or seen my work , just start a new thread about me or my company please ..

I posted the following on a thread asking the same question re a Z4M. I can't see any real difference to the E46M
For me...
Fuel 25mpg average over 15k mls
Insurance c £500pa
Tracker £130pa
Warranty - mine runs out 2010 but its c £600pa IIRC
Rear Tyres £400 pair every 15k mls
Front tyres similar but dunno wear rate
Servicing
Oil - £160 every 22kmls
Insp 1 - £626 every oher 22k mls
Brake Fluid £48 every two years
Depreciation - don't ask!
So for 12k mls / year
Fuel £2600
Ins £600
Tracker £130
Warranty £600
Tyres £320
Servicing £500
Say £5k!!! or 42p/mile...
Its only money...
ps you need to factor in £400 road tax too I forgot and can't be bothered to correct the calcs!

Oh I should add eTyres are mighty impressive.
Rears £200ea all in fitted for conti M3's - PS2's £274ea
http://www.etyres.co.uk/car-tyres-uk/detail?produc...
Fronts £170ea all in fitted for conti M3's - PS2's £230ea
http://www.etyres.co.uk/car-tyres-uk/detail?produc...
prices are similar to Black circles but they come to your house and its a franchise so they care more than the Muppets in the tyre fitters.
