I know this involves a lot of variables, but generally how many miles would you expect a E39 M5 to be good for, assuming it to be well maintained.
Is buying one over 100K something to be afraid of, or should it have at least another 100K to go.
Of course it will depend on how the cars been treated, what kind of journeys, oil changes and the like, so just looking for a very general answer.
Does anyone own, or have knowledge of a higher mileage car?

This thread more than covers your question,

The biggest issues will be does the owner(s) have the funds to keep the car well, and that includes resprays after accidents, using a decent wax on the bodywork, looking after the suspension bushes, alloys, wheel bearings, gearbox and electricals.
Service history is all well and good but look for bills. I would rather buy a well driven and higer mileage car than a garage queen with few bills or stamps in the log book.
Damp, short journeys and poor servicing are more of an issue than 120,000 miles and loads of bills from decent specialists.
A good car should last for well over 200 K before rebuilding the engine, both top and bottom.
Bodywork is a different issue as is the underside of the car....how clean is it, any waxoil treatments and what condition are the suspension / steering bits in??

I pretty much agree with this, although perhaps not the wax Service history is all well and good but look for bills. I would rather buy a well driven and higer mileage car than a garage queen with few bills or stamps in the log book.

Mine loves being dirty, but that takes nothing away from the mechanical condition. Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
