On a decent drive without using the full boost of 500bhp, maybe low 20's. In central London 12 mpg! When really going for it ie on track or on the Autobahn I have heard of people seeing 8 mpg.

The problems lie in the size of the tank not the consumption. If you are lucky 260 miles is all you will get even if driving like Miss Daisy!

Running costs are not massive, but there are some big bills to be had if the gearbox or engine pack up.

Only had mine a couple of days, but compared to this my SL55 is economical, like the last poster I think the problem is going to be the amount of time spent at the pumps rather than the costs.

I have had my e60 m5 for about 10 months, according to the obc the average mpg since I have owned the car is 19.3 mpg.

This is a mix of driving, work is 25 miles away down a mix of b roads and then a short run down a dual carriageway. No real city centre driving.

Using the obc to record specific journeys i have seen it go as low as 7mpg for a single tank but i think my 10 month average seems a better balance.

The real impact though is the car use a 1/4 of tank each day just going to work and back meaning at least two visits per week to my friendly petrol station

My driving is mainly in the town and my average is showing 13.5.

Drove 35 B road miles the other weekend like a granny on beta blockers and still couldn't better 19.5!

Mines gone now.....but averaged 17.3 mpg overall....with 60 mile round trips each day of which 45 miles a day was motorway...

My thoughts if you manage anything above this...bearing in mind I had a heavyish right foot...then you must drive like a pansy!!!!!

If you're serious about owning an E60 M5 then budget 15 mpg on the safe side if you're planning to enjoy it......

I miss it!!

This is an eye opener, my E39 M5 is averaging 22.4 over the month. But again is blighted by small tank syndrome.

Mine's a M6. Had it 4 weeks. Mixture of City centre crawl and NSL roads for my daily commute and returing an average of around 13 mpg over the 4 weeks.

I've had mine since last summer.

Mines usually reading 10-13 MPG (13 is good) but on the motorway it does go all the way to 20.1!

Other than pure motorway driving I have never got to 200 miles out of a tank. It probably would but I'll fill it up before then.

I'm not heavy footed but the type of roads/driving really makes a difference. When driving I drive in dumb dumb mode too, not much in it with the power button pressed.

Actually the M5 MPG is pretty good. The problem is more peoples expectation of what appears to be a 5 series saloon.

If I just drive it in London, I get about 150 miles out of a tank. If I just drive on the motorway, I get over 300 miles.

Its not that bad really because i seem to avereage at 16-17 mpg in my e46 m3 on local runs and the m5 is a 5.0 v10 compared to the 3.2 straight 6 and also heavier.

17.6 mpg for mine, and the M5 is cheap to run, servicing is very cheap, front discs should last 50k, pad's 25k, everything is changed on a CBS service plan [condition based].
