Phoned up my local dealer and got an okay price of £975 for front and rear discs pads and handbrake shoes. I was going to do it myself and phoned Partco and priced up everything apart from the front discs as these ar a BMW only item. All the items from Partco came in at just over £200 so phoned my local dealer to price discs, £380 for front discs. I phoned local dealer and after a quick chat he said he would do it all for £775 including VAT.
Not a bad deal and not worth doing it myself with non standard parts for that saving.

Just had a similar experience myself with discounts on brake parts from the dealer for my e39 M5. Credit crunch pragmatism perhaps?

That's about twice the price it cost me to do mine on an e34 M5, so yes it is expensive wink

Shudder to think what the e60/61 prices would be eek

Still way too much IMO.

The front and rear pads and rear discs are also used on other BMWs. The front pads are the same as the 540i too IIRC. The rear pads are used on the 330d models I think. You could have sourced them from a decent autoparts shop.

GSF or Eurocarparts would have had the front discs in stock too.

What the hell do you expect? Look at BMW's requirements of the way they expect their Dealerships to present themselves. It cost's millions. That's why your BMW Dealership charges over £100/hr (£200/hr if it's an ///M car!).

Take your car to an Independant Garage......

Mike, that's crap. You 'only' pay around the £100 regardless of whether it's an //M car or not. Yes, and I do concur, it is fking outrageous but just getting quotes in Switzerland for work on a SEAT came out with a labour rate of over £150 per hour. I hate to think what BMW charges.

Are you calling me "Shirley"? I'll see you in Puerto Banus (Sinatras Bar) on Friday.

That would be for a 3.6 e34 though and not a "floating disc" 3.8 ?

It could be much cheaper if you could buy non BMW standard front discs. I can't see anyone doing it themselves for much under £600. For the half day to do it and the time messing about as nothing is that easy it worth the extra to get BMW doing it.
I did phone a few places and all them said the would have to get the discs from BM.

From experience, there isn't a huge difference between OEM BMW parts and non-OEM parts.

£775 is pretty impressive for a dealer.
I got mine checked over last May and the dealer quoted £997+VAT for all the brakes which they informed me would need done soon - or another 10k miles as it turned out.

However the joy of doing the brakes at a non-franchise is that you can stick whatever pads in you want.
I expect most BMW dealers would get sniffy if you ask them to put in upgraded pads.

Priced up discs and pads for my 1992 E34 M5 3.8 the other day from Euro Car Parts, not that it needs them, just curious as to what they would cost. Front discs where around £125 a pair, rears between £65-£90 a pair depending on which brand you go for. Front pads ranged from £15-£50 a pair, and rears £15-£30. Didn't think those prices were too bad.

Think I am right in saying the earlier 3.8 E34 M5's had non-floating discs and the later ones, perhaps '94 onwards?, had the more expensive floating discs.

Be aware we have come across dealers supplying non oe parts, its becoming more common as they try to compete more so on older vehicles & often you will find a small disclaimer on the invoice.

All E34 BMW's (inc M5) have the same pads. These pads are also found on the E46 M3 too I believe.

They're the 'hammerhead' types

I have just had the car back and invoice. All the parts are listed then labour is only £86.00.

No they don't!

The later 3.8s with the big discs and 4-pot calipers use different front pads!
