My E46 M3 needs a serivce...it is still under warranty and so needs to be serviced at a main BMW service department. However I have heard a lot of negative comments about a few around my local area i.e Stephen James Enfield.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I could take my car, it needs an inspection 2 service (so it is vital that I find a reliable firm).

I live in the Middlesex area, so anywhere around that area would be perfect.

It doesn't need to be a BMW dealer.

Take it to Hexagon in Highgate if you're worried about Enfield.

I have also heard that Hexagon of Highgate tend to throw the cars about when on a test run, also I have had bad experiences with Scotthall as on my E36 M3 Evo, they replaced the steering wheel with another type and claimed it was not them...it seems that genuine BMW service centres are not as honest and reliable as it tends to be portrayed.

Don't take it to BMW then. Go to someone like Phil Crouch or Bexley Motors.

Are you sure that voids the warranty?

Yes, this voids the extended BMW warranty "insurance scheme".

Just get a list of the ten closest dealers and get the cheapest price. I had the best service from Sytner High Wycombe recently, but they are a bit more expensive than others close by. To be honest, you can't win..
