Conversion to do away with the vanos on a E36 M3 evo
Discussion
it should only be done on race cars. you can buy a de vanos kit but you wont have much low down power, all the power will be at the top end.
schrick cam's and de=vanos are two totally seperate things. ou can fit 284/284 schricks with out removing the vanos. if you went for 296/296 cams then you'd remove the vanos but then your in to race car territory and the car would be a dog on the road and in traffic etc

Do a search for "Dr Vanos" for a recon unit.
To de-vanos an M3 also requires standalone engine management and everything that entails. It also reduces the amount of torque available under 4500rpm, so not ideal in a road car.
If you do want to go down that route (and it is much more expensive than a Dr Vanos kit) then go onto the BMSport website and have a look at the options.

What's actually the problem?
Mine seems to be rather noisy compared to this time last year. She doesn't feel down on power and I'm careful to warm her up before over-reved. I suspected the Vanos and had a look at Dr Vanos. However the noise on the video on their website post Vanos mods sounded more like mine does rather than the expected pre Vanos mods noise??
So I've had it tested at the local Indie and the Vanos unit itself is working fine - well within the spec limits. I was told that the noise would be down to the wear and tear on the gears the unit operates rather than the Vanos itself and that he would recommend the gears be replaced before the Vanos. These gears aren't cheap mind you, and there are 2 of them. Comes in around the £1k mark. I've elected to leave all alone for now as if the Vanos does fail it goes into a safe state and will not harm the engine. I would be interested to hear if anyone else has changed the gears and not the Vanos?
