I have seen a good priced one but it has no BMW extended warranty and is a EU import. Is there another warranty that can be bought?

Perhaps I should just leave this one alone, my instinct tells me to. What says you lot?

If it has a full bmw service history you can take out a bmw warrenty. Costs more for the first year, and then it reduces to the same price as the normal extended warrenty. Not overly convinced the bmw warrenty is all it's cracked up to be, they won't even pay for wiring problems.

No no no no no no no no no no no no no no NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I'd not buy one without a full BMW Warranty and from a dealer, personally.

The bits are too expensive.... smile

Alternately, put £5k away in the bank and then you can take your chances without... wink

I really would not recommend one without a BMW warranty. I have had my 2006 for a year and so far it has had:-

Numerous rattles, which are still not fixed.
Sunroof decided to stop working.
New clutch / flywheel.
Red cog of death (only once and has not come on since.)
New steering wheel - paint peeling off.
I can't remember what else but it would have cost me £4000 if I didn't have the warranty!

This does NOT include servicing or oil.

The dealer has been superb although they did admit that the M5 can be complicated..

I have taken it up with BMW UK and they acknowleged it is not what to expect but the best they could do was a contribution of 1/2 of the extended warranty cost (£451.00)

I have accepted this as it gives me piece of mind for the next year, although I can't say I'm particularly happy about it.

Cayenne, how did you contact BMW UK, phone or by letter? I've got issues with a recently purchased M3 and the dealership I bought it from. Thinking about contacting BMW Uk if it's not sorted quickly.

Contacting BMW direct invariably leads back to the Dealer. I asked for a regional technical advisor to meet with me and the service manager which enabled action to fix a problem with the carbon roof.
Water had got between the gel coat and fibre weave after stone chipping damage and yes BMW did fix under warranty.

Personally I'd be worried about the complexity of the car and gearbox issues without warranty. The latter I hear is big bucks to fix/replace. For 4-5k more, you could buy one with warranty/from a dealer. Amazing car though...

If you can knock them down on the price to compensate for the lack of warranty I would buy it, my main concern would be the fact it was an import!

Have my eye on another now. It has full service history, including the running-in. Extended warranty to end of this year. We'll see.

Why - do they build them differently? rolleyes

Warrentee seems the most important thing since its a hard driven and complicated car.

My local BMW dealership were quite open about the problems that they have experienced with the E60 M5 as I was asking advice whilst contemplating buying one. They put me off completely when they confirmed that some (mainly early) cars suffered from oil stavation as a result of poor oil pipework design. I wouldn't touch one without a warranty and even then, most car magazines are pretty slathing of the SMG when compared against its more younger competition and therefore I question whether they are being a little too unfashionable (residuals).

I still love that name "Red Cog Of Death".

It's probably the worst thing you'll see on an M5's display.

Only ever saw it once in mine, but it was terminal & i had my 5 mins of fame as every radio station in the South East of England was providing traffic updates on the blocked A329 in Bracknell at 08:10 in the Monday rush hour by a Blue BMW (my M5). The cog appeared as i exited the M4 en-route to the M3 & the car just siezed in 1st gear in stop start traffic, bring this major trunk route to a standstill.

Could not engage neutral & the car had to be dragged by force with it's rear wheels locked up onto a low loader. After about 100, i lost count of the number of times i'd been called a c0ck by passing angry motorists.

Car needed a full SMG box replaced under warranty. Hence the term, "Red Cog Of Death".

Ps. BMW UK's Head Office was 2 miles from where i broke down, so i ordered the low loader to drop my car off there.

What's wrong with buying privately if it has the warranty?

Nothing if it has a BMW warranty, plenty if it has some mickey mouse one. Did you read the original post? My comments refer back to that, and the fact he was buying without a warranty.
