Suprised by a Mini Cooper S!!!
Discussion
Got shocked by a little Mini Cooper S yesterday afternoon driving round a few twistys on sunday afternoon! he was tootling along up a hill at 20 on a NSL road and i'll admit i was getting impatient because its an amazing road to drive and i know it quite well, but feck me when we got to the top of the hill did i get a shock, its almost like someone lit a rocket under the mini, i blinked and next thing i knew he was off! came as a shock and it shames me to say i had difficulty catching him!
the road is very twisty with lots of tight(ish) turns and to be fair i just couldn't get the power down in a straight line long enough to make much progress on him.
I'm sure i'll get a roasting for 'letting the side down' but was impressed by the way the little car held the road and just slingshot through the corners!
to the driver of the Mini "i doff my cap to thee sir"

AK,
wasnt by any chance an odd looking blue and white one with "minimania" on the back?
I got had by one of those on the M4!
Nope, from what i saw (and admittedly it was just rear end and brake lights) it looked pretty standard, black and white jobby.wasnt by any chance an odd looking blue and white one with "minimania" on the back?

I'll keep my eyes peeled for 'odd' looking minis in future tho!
They are awesome little cars - don't be embarassed. I drove one round the tight circuit at Rockingham last year and did a Ferrari 360!
Thinking about getting the Mrs one next year!
It's also one of the reasons why I want to improve my driving skills - no point having a car as capable as an E92 M3 and then being stitched up by a well-driven focus or something

As JP said, nothing to be embarrassed about. I use a JCW as a daily hack and its easily as quick on cross country routes as the Z4M, in fact when Evo did last year's ECOTY they reckoned their JCW was easily keeping up (and in some instances shaming) far more exotic machinery so its no surprise that a MCS was quick of the mark.

Was it near Reading? Sounds like one near where I work. It has a sports exhaust, large alloys and massive aftermarket brakes. I think the owner must do a few track days. wasnt by any chance an odd looking blue and white one with "minimania" on the back?

Drive one sometimes -it's the other half's.
I think its the low-down torque with the Cooper S that makes it spritely. However, I find that my 328i is more than a match for it down my "test route". I think it really, really depends on the road, the R56 is sometime way too stiff and can become unruly on your average b-road...
They are BMWs anyway

Hi guys
I've own both a Works & the GP works, and 2 M3s!!
Round the twisties the Mini's are absolutely superb. You can drive right on the limit seemingly all the time and they're so adjustable it's never really of any concern. You can get on the power seriously early and just modulate the throttle on-and-off to ease out of any times when you're a bit too keen. Amazing fun, I loved em (apart from them looking a bit gay).
But that said, the power differential between even the GP and the M3 is something else. Get back in a Mini and it will feel breathless (a bit like a 2.7 Boxster!) and the reality is that on anything other than something seriously twisty the M3 would eat it alive.
If I needed a 2nd car as a run around then I'd be back in a Works in a shot.
Cheers

Akurei. Get the Evo in the power band 50-70odd 2nd gear the road is very twisty with lots of tight(ish) turns and to be fair i just couldn't get the power down in a straight line long enough to make much progress on him.

It was actually just pass Bristol on the M4 eastbound, but I commute to Reading daily, yet to see it again though
Did try to get the guy to pull in to the services so I could chat, but to no avail
