I have a 51 plate E46 M3 which has developed a small engine oil leak which i have traced to what i can only describe as a large 32mm hex nut with a nobby bit on the end! located on the lefthand side of the engine block near the front (bumper end) of the engine just below the head.
It seems to have a copper gasket between it and the block and was loosing about half a litre of oil a day and put the fear of god into me!!
I have managed with much difficulty and numerous burns to my hands and wrists to get a socket onto it and nip it up again but i am at a loss to what this thing is and what it does?
Can anyone shed any light and advise as to what i should do with this, i know i should get it checked out with the dealer but they seem to charge me £500.00 everytime they open the bonnet and if i have managed to tighten this up again and the leak has stopped wonder if the trip to the stealers is worthwhile?

the part in question is the cam chain tensioner. just tighten it up. may need a new copper washer if still it leaks .

Thanks Metcalp, i take it the actual tensioner part is underneath this cap and tightening up this part will not affect anything to do with cam tension etc??

Thanks mate, thats certainly put my mind at rest!
Now its time to ring its neck again, been driving it like a granny for the last week as i thought my engine would seize at any moment.
By the way do you know if there any place i can buy a workshop manual along the lines of a Haynes type thing for the M3, i'm quite handy with a spanner and the way money is nowadys i would'nt mind doing a few service / preventative maintenance things myself

I had a similar sito with a mates m3 and he also thought it was the chain tensioner but ended up being the vanos gasket leaking.
Easy to check, just run your finger under the vanos (its a bit tight) and see if there is any oil their and if it is then thats what will be running down and coming of the tensioner.
U can also use a mirror to look and as the vanos is at an angle it always drips of off near the tensioner which is the lowest part.
The washer for the tensioner is 16p from bmw and is alumnuim and not copper.

Hi guys

My 316ti had an oil leak coming from the tensioner bolt after it had come loose. I took it out to check for damnage to threads/ washer etc and put it back in.

But now I have a rattle coming from the engine, which gets louder when i accelerate. Could this be to do with the timing chain position after i took the bolt out?
