If your car has more than 70k you might want to change these since they give the engine a new lease of life!

My car of late felt a tad lethargic at the bottom end and didnt rev as quickly as it used to.With the sep's changed it is smoother, quieter and the throttle response is erm.. sharper to say the least.

You have to bear in mind that if the ecu senses any irregularity re emissions it will kill the ignition ect leaving you with less power..

HTH.

If the E39 seperators are the same design as the E36 M3 (they look it from RealOEM) then they are cyclone style seperators, i.e. I believe there is nothing in them that wears out (unless anyone knows any different?). They can clog (and can be cleaned out with carb or brake cleaner) but the major problems come from the attached hoses that can completely collapse after years of hot oil vapour acting on the rubber. The hoses can look perfectly fine on the outside but can collapse internally.
I certainly recommend checking the seperator and hoses as the input hose on mine fell to bits on touching it. On the E36 you have to remove the Intake Manifold to get to it but it is easy enough to do.
Check the idle control hoses at the same time.

If you want slightly better performance then ditch the system altogether and replace with an oil catch tank. Check your intake manifold for traces of oil to see whether it's worthwhile, after 100k miles mine had hardly any so I kept the seperator, if you find a lot of oil then it would be worth ditching the system (and checking for component wear that would cause it).
