I am thinking of getting the Haywood & Scott rear silencers for E39 M5, what do people think of them ? Is their anyone who has them fitted that lives in Kent so i could have a listen to see what they sound like ? I just want a slightly louder sound than standard but not by a lot as it would do my head in to have a really noisey exhaust.

Hi Simon,

I don't have them fitted, however i have spoken to H&S just last week so i can give you a pricing guide. I was quoted £685 for a set with additional silencing, with a choice between 80 or 90mm tailpipes, including vat and delivery.

By contrast, i spoke to a local bespoke exhaust company (Pipewerx near Ormskirk) and they said they can do me a custom pair of backboxes, similar to the fitment of the H&S system (as in, OEM resonator back) for £460 all in, including vat and fitment. For this price they will also alter the OEM backboxs which they take off so they can be refitted to the system incase i feel like a quieter period of driving. I can also choose how much silencing i want and tailpipe designs etc on the day. I think i'm going to go for 90mm straight cut, as per OEM, just bigger tailpipes.

Comparing the two i decided the bespoke system was a better setup for me, maybe worth investigating if you have somewhere like that near you who could help you out?

Thanks

Matt

Simon,

H+S are considered to be one of the loudest systems available. A quick search on youtube will confirm that.
Saying that, I beleive they are made to order so perhaps a call to the company and you could discuss fitting more silencing.
Rich (RSwheelnut) had one fabricated at his local exhaust shop, they tailored it to his specification and volume and it does sound great. He wanted simething just above stock. This was for about £500 so that may be a way to do it?

This is my one I had done (see link below). Like you, i wanted just a bit louder to bring out the noise, but not too much as i use the car for business and do quite a high mileage.

Mine is throaty at low revs, more crisp at high revs, and no different when cruising the motorway.
