Having a look at this tomorrow or Tuesday. My thoughts are its going to be scruffy and not to touch it with a bargepole but it is cheap and he reckons there is loads of history.
The council eyebrows and badges are ringing alarm bells for me.

Any thoughts?

Oxford green is not a good (or popular) colour for a 5er in my view. Might go a little way to explaining the cheap price tag.

I thought that, and initially i didnt like it (my father has a 330ci in Oxford green)
but after I looked at it for a while it has grown on me a bit.

its cheap, but M5's arent cars that should be bought on price. They can sting big, and I'd avoid one thats been passed about with lots of owners not parting with the cash required to keep them in the order they require.

Could be a 'bargain' but be aware of what you are looking at and get it inspected if you don't know your stuff with these.

Despite the engine change the running gear is still 148k old.... Has the car been maintained with that in mind?

Plus the ///M badges on the boot and bonnet ... what's that all about then?

Also just because it has the revised rings that's no guarantee it won't sup on the Castrol.

If you're reasonably local, it would be worth taking a look at. Scrutanise the paperwork to ensure all is as it should be. I work on the basis that if its a bargain, then it sells immediately. This ad is already six days old, so it might not be the bargain you hope for. That said, Aberdeenshire is a fair old hike, so buyers may be limited.

"The car is clean and tidy and where's its miles very..."

That alone would put me off, as well as the poor layout and lack of information in the advert. You would think there was a word limit judging by some of the ads on the classifieds. I instantly think of a twenty-something McDonalds-eating, WKD-drinking, sportswear-clad oik when I see poor spelling and grammar, but let's not open that can of worms. I'd walk...

I agree, its 2 minutes from my work so ill have a look, im a mechanic with 14 years of experience so any mechanical stuff needing looked at doesnt really bother me, its just bodywork and parts prices that bother me really.
Im holding out hope that its really is ok and its maybe under priced but ill wait and see!
Ill report back after i have seen it.

Thanks for the comments guys..

Crappy M badge instead of the BMW logo, stupid 'eyelids' on the headlights, mobile phone pictures taken on an industrial estate, no interior photos, poor spelling and grammar.

I'm sure it's a really well kept example.

I'd take that as an indicator of what you'll be dealing with and walk away now.....

That is far too cheap for what I would call worth it. For 6 grand I would suspect he is just getting rid.

Take your pick but bear in mind, £10k for a high miled, early but well maintained car is about the bottom.

Just had mine serviced and the engine is still as hemetic an oil container as one could imagine, even after more than 107k...

If you are still looking for one at the absolute bottom end of the market, then this one looks rather nice (obviously owned by someone with a carbon fetish...) http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1206732.htm

I briefly hooned mine, last night, in less than ideal conditions.

My cohort, Gandalf, has likened the pick up in this car to a 'ram jet' effect, whereby at 'certain speeds' the thing seems to get a second wind and just fires off with a venom redolent - I st ye not - of the M6.

I mean, it obviously isn't that quick but mated to the uncanny levels of associated composure and stability, it once more cemented it's credentials in my psyche.

Quite simply, the best.

The End.
