Am considering buying an E46 M3 with >60k miles. What are my options with respect to getting/maintaining a warranty?

I've tried a few sites (Warranty Direct, Tesco), but neither seem to have any products on offer for the M3.

I know BMW Insured Warranty will have a product but not sure what the cost is and whether the benefits are that much better than a third party company.

Any pointers appreciated, as this will probably be the largest single cost of ownership.

Warrenty Direct do do one for the M3, its about 1K, like most aftermarket warrenties its about as much use as a chocolate teapot.

BMW will not do you a warrenty unless you are extending an existing one.

It doesn't show up on their website - do you need to call them to get a quote?

BMW do do warranties even if your car is out of one - I've had one on two previous BMWs I've owned, both of which had lapsed manufacturer's warranties.

Warranty Direct always used too, suggest giving them a call. It did however have a max claim limit per claim of 1K, which is completely useless.

Yep, that pays for neither a gearbox nor an engine...

The Warranty Direct Policy is awesome.

Speak to them, I am paying £600 a year, main dealer to carry out any work, and the max value is the value of the car, so everything covered.

They have replaced springs, wishbones etc. etc. with no quibbles what so ever and I will be using them again.

Even the guys at BMW said they were easier to get the go ahead than Mondial, who now do the official BMW warranty.

WD will only pay a certain percentage for parts, so between 60-70 miles they pay 90%, 70-80k miles it is 85%, etc. etc. or something like that.

But on my last claim the total was £640 for front wishbones and the parts were only £300 odd, so I got £640 less £30, which is great.

No excess on mine either.

Makes the BMW one at £1500 seem a little pricey.

That sounds awesome - how many miles is your car on? I'm coming off a BMW warranty next March and will be over the magic 60k by then.

Try Warranty wise. It looks like an honest policy, you can select level of cover and hourly labour rates. It seems fine to me. YOu can pay for a month by month policy too.

I have no connection with the company!

To be honest we found WD on both a 5er and SLK to be pants. No reason to suspect it would be different with an M IMHO.

Each to their own I guess.
