My mate has had his jacket go missing on a night out which had his car keys in the pocket. He doesn't have a spare set, so how can he go about getting a new set off BMW.

Big question being, is he likely to need a new lockset since they won't have a key to know what the replacement should be cut like?

AFAIK BMW hold a set number of keys for each e39; you'll need a dealer & proof of ownership & they'll supply a replacement, so no need for a lock change. I don't think there's any other way of doing it.

He will need proof of owenership, so Passport, V5, Utility bill, and several litres of anol lube when they give him the bill.

Where are the other sets?

Believe he only got one set when he bought it (from a dealer that advertises a fair bit on here iirc).

Should be fun. The V5 is in the car as he was taxing it last week, in his work bag with the phone numbers of everyone he was out with in his new job that might have taken his coat when they left the bar. Got to be honest, I am feintly amused by this...

He won't be.

BMW will NO WAY issue new keys without full details that it's his.

WTF was he doing buying a car without full sets of keys??

WTF??!

BMW charge £100 or so for new keys Im told. Not having the master/origional does make things more interesting though.
