has anyone who's owned one of these noticed a significant difference in fuel consumption between running at 400bhp and 500bhp? i'm curious as otherwise there doesn't seem a lot of point in having the option of either/or!

I find P400 worth having and do use it a lot, the throttle is a lot less sensitive and that is a good thing when driving around town or in traffic. Fuel consumption wise it doesn't really matter what you do, P400, P500 Sport, driving slowly, driving fast .. it will empty the 70L tank in around 5 minutes.

i don't think that's strictly true. i used to have a 2003 Maser 4200 which did similar mpg out of a 390 bhp 4.2 litre V8. i could afford to run it, but given that i save about £1200 per year on just my fuel bill (let alone depreciation/servicing) now that i drive a 996 911 of similar age (based on 10k miles, 25 mpg average, £1.10 per litre of super u/l), it means i can take the cash and spend it on track days at effectively no extra cost mid to low teens most of the time.

i think i might have to go and blag a test drive of an M5 at a garage somewhere now. i've always loved BMWs and M cars especially (i came sooo close to buying a Z4M) and i have a real hankering to have a play with a V10 
btw, what's the highest mpg anyone has ever got on a motorway cruise? on the forums here, people claim to have seen 30 and a bit mpg out of the Monaros at a steady 75mph, and i think their official combined cycle is about the same as an M5's

You notice a difference in throttle response between P400 and P500? P500S, yes, but I don't notice a difference otherwise.sorry i didnt mean to be derogative with the cant afford to run it comment just ment if you worried about fuel consumption then this aint going to be the car for that.
I tool about in 400 mode as well and then when i want a blast press the M button and off i go.

Yup. Press start button, press power button, into gear, disengage handbrake, depress throttle. I use the tachometer lights and oil temp gauge to decide when it's ready for battle.I went for a balls out thrape the other night after a fortnight's sabbatical. Most things were set to 11 and the overriding emotion was amusement.
Retired after less than half an hour when it occurred that the only thing likely to come of such a foray was an inconvenient ammendment to the old licence.

it still strikes me as odd that there's no mpg difference though...doesn't the car shut down 2 clinders or something when at 400? AFAIU, all other things being equal, if an engine with less horsepower is lugging around the same weight, it should use less fuel. obviously the ancillary engine components (aircon etc) still have to be run, but they don't consume that much power. any automotive engineers about here to explain? i can do aircraft, but not cars so much!

There's a thread running on the M5 board where somebody has logged a journey with photos. He has 29.7 mpg on his OBC.
