just bought a Z4M not to long ago and i've got 21000 miles on the clock. The computer tells me i've got another 4k miles before service.

1. whats the services normally cost on a Z4M
2. with servicing, do i just get the service carried out when the car tells me to or should they get serviced on time interval as well. i'll only do about 5k miles a year..

cheers..

Inspection 1 will be £600-700 depending on your location. Assuming you take it to a main dealer. Ring a few and try to play them off each other. The oil service after that at about 35-40k will be £200ish.

Dont listen Inspection 1 is not £600 - £700 i got mine done at a specialist for £200, General oil Service is about £100 - £150 then Inspection 2 is about £500 as that is the biggy.

If it's covered under the BMW Insured Warranty (extended by the private owner after it's 3 yrs old) then you'll need to take it to a main dealer or the warranty will be invalidated.

Not sure on the BMW AUC warranty, check in the T&Cs.

no you dont need to take it the main dealer it was brought in under some compitition law as long as the independant use "Bmw Approved Parts" then the warranty will remain intack!

This is specifically NOT true for the BMW Insured Warranty which is technically an insurance policy not a 'warranty' - and so contains the term that it must be serviced at a BMW Main Dealer or the policy is void.

Now, whether the warranty each year + the extra cost of servicing at a BMW dealer is worth it, that's an entirely separate discussion..

If it's a new car warranty, then you can take it to any VAT registered garage, so long as they follow the BMW service schedule, and use genuine parts.

If the car has a BMW Approved Used Car warranty, or BMW Insured extended warranty, then it must be serviced at a BMW dealer.

The reason for this, is that used car and extended warranties are classed as insurance policies, which allowes the provider to apply further terms and conditions.

i stand corrected and am glad you have said as ive brought AUC and was just going to use a specialist.

Like i did with the new one so if under Manufactures warranty Specialist is fine if under AUC Scheme waranty you can only use main dealer.

Typo? Inspection 1 for £200!!! Never heard of it being anywhere near that cheap before. I'd have to question that its all been done at that price!

John - your wrong mate, Taking it to a specialist will NOT invalidate your warranty!

I've go Ins 1 coming up in 600 miles! £672 is what i've been quoted! eeeek! Not sure whether to brunt the cost for the sake of a dealer stamp or go to a specialist...I've no intention of selling, so may got specialist...

It will not invalidate your 3-yr warranty that comes with the car from new. It WILL invalidate (or prevent you from buying) the Insured Warranty that you can buy once the car is three years old.

An Authorised BMW Dealer or BMW Service Authorised Workshop using only genuine BMW Parts must carry out all service and warranty work.

Inspection I is an oil change et etc and a tappet reset on the Z4M / M3 engine. They either haven't done a full Inspection I schedule (left out the time consuming tappets) or you haven't had an Inspection I or they've charged you wrong. £200 doesn't even get close - even at an indi

well considering i was there when they were checking the valve clearances and that it was the 3rd qoute i had for an inspection 1 at £200 i can tell you it was right and i was very happy to pay it.

Sorry just dont like people telling me something didnt happen at what i paid as i was there and i paid it and know what is involved in an inspection 1 as i specifically asked and when i turned up early they were doing the said checks.

Dick lovett swindon was price matching them at one point but i missed that deal by about 3 weeks.

Shop around is all i can say dealer to dealer vary's greatly aswell and i would never expect to pay the RRP of an inspection 1 at a dealer either in fact out of all the M cars i have owned i have never paid the RRP by just shopping around initially the dealer network and then getting them to price match.

A car with BMW history is more desireable than one with specialist. IMHO

Even doing it myself, I worked out filters, gaskets and oil would cost £150 (genuine parts from Euro Car Parts) to £180 (genuine parts from BMW) (don't forget that BMW AUC warranty requires you to use genuine parts - not necessarily from BMW of course, but says you can get the work done anywhere).

Oil filter - £11 (£9 from ECP)
Air filter - £25 (£15 from ECP)
Microfilter - £35 (£21 from ECP)
Valve cover gasket - £35
6 x plug socket gaskets - £24
Oil - £60

Then there's the shims at £8 each - you may not need any, or you may need 24 - and if you do need any, you'd have to order them as the dealers don't normally keep stock of them.

Care to say who is charging £200 for an all inclusive Inspection I then? If that is indeed the case they'll be a queue right down the street. I have never heard a price that low.

I'm struggling a bit to undertand what your saying. You wont be getting an Inspection 1 at the dealer for £200. Bottom line is if you don't get it warrantied by BMW you are not elidgeable to take out the official BMW standard warranty and therefore lose out at resale time.

If you plan on keeping the car a long time it may be worthwhile to go the specialist route.
